I have been hunting the hollows pretty hard since I have seen some good signs. Everytime I hunt I am not seeing much in the way of deer, maybe 1 or 2 deer every 5 times I hunt. I could hunt the ridge tops, but I would have to approach from the bottom due to the way the property line is situated. Has anyone had any luck on a ridge instead of a hollow? Any advice would be great! Thanks

The wind tends to swirl in hollows making them hard to hunt. I hunt places like your talking about. I try to find a bench on the side of the ridge that the deer are using or find a low gap along the ridge.

Most of the deer on my farm come from the ridge tops. Its easier for them to stay up there and look out for doe's than it is being down inthe hollow. Dont get me wrong, i see lots of deer in the hollers to, but right now all the sign and activity is on the ridge tops. Plus you can see a long ways to.

I been seeing the bulk of mine coming out of a clear cut walking down a hollow. Hunting a different hollow this afternoon as a change of strategy trying to catch them coming out of a bedding area heading to food plots.

You need to have a very good understanding of the wind directions and thermals and how they react to different conditions to succesfully hunt hollows on a given piece of property.

I would try and find a saddle on the ridge if it has one.. Make sure the wind is rite though... Or try and find a part of the ridge where it pinches down and becomes narrow with to opposing hollows or draws running off it...

I hunt a mountain similar to yours and have to walk up the mountain to get near the saddle/ridge line that they like to funnel through. Property lines wont allow me to enter from the top although it would be much easier since there is a atv trail all the way up on the other side. anyhow, one thing if you plan to hike the mountain--try to pack your heavy clothing in with you. You will sweat less and stay warmer in the long haul. then you can put on your coverall or whatever when you get to your tree. I used to hike with all my gear/clothes on and i would freeze 2 hrs later due to all the sweating I had done.

Thank you all for the advice. From what I've read the "Thermals" cause the wind to travel up hill in the morning as the air warms and down hill in the evening as the air cools. I do notice a lot of swirling wind in the hollow. Im gonna hit the ridge tops and see what happens.

A gap on top of ridge or saddle on top of ridge is best for me than in hollers.
