Ok let me ask you a question if I had a rifle and you liked it an asked to buy it for $300 and I said no i want $500. What is the right thing to do? Now we are all Gods people and our words have power. So if you current employer wanted you more they should have paid you what you were worth not what they could get away with. I would turn my notice in. I have been in that situation before and came real close this year. But one thing for me is if I make an offer/counter offer and you accept it is a contract to me.

If all things being equal I would go with the most stable company. If they are both pretty steady go with your first instinct. Make a decision and don't look back. Sounds like its a WIN WIN either way your go.

I would REALLY consider and ask this new company how Obamacare will affect your position.
Many people don't realize that companies will soon drop full time positions and change/add part timers. (If you didn't know Ocare now says anyone working 28+ hours is considerred full time).
Not sure if you have any seniority at your current job but that may be beneficial when Ocare kicks in to be able to keep you at 40 instead of 28.

All good advice, but, when I did some reading on the internet years ago when I was job-hopping, I remember reading that you should NEVER take more money to stay where you are. Why? The reason is that you didn't start looking because of the money. Something else in your job caused you to look somewhere else.
I also agree that your current job, offering you more money, could cause resentment with them. It could also cause friction if you begin to look again (for the same reasons you entertained the other offer).
Bottom line - if you were happy in your current job, the money wouldn't make much difference...
Final Word though - I ALWAYS pray in these situations. If God doesn't want you to walk through a door, He is fully capable of slamming it shut.

Brother and Sister hunters....I call upon your wisdom. I find myself in a difficult situation. In economic times we are in where jobs are so hard to find I feel unworthy for this problem. I have worked for the same corporation for 5 yrs and dont really have any complaints. They have been good to me and I enjoy what I do. In recent months I have been approached by another company. This company doesnt have the corporate taste and is really involved in the community and is financially stable as well. They made me an offer and I again explained I was happy where I was so I counter offered and it was excepted. Now the problem... My current company matched their offer. The problem being... I like the feel I get at the 2nd company with the feel of a community style company. Yet I respect and enjoy working with the corporate company. This was unexpected as usually they dont negotiate with someone attempting to resign... I dont know what to do. If no advice just please send up some kneemail as I got to finish this tommorrow.....Thanks
Dear Current Company:
I greatly appreciate your counter offer, and would like to let you know up front that I was truly intending on resigning. I do not find it proper to bargain one company against another, and was informing you of my intentions. I have made my decision based on careful thought and consideration for my family and me, and feel that a smaller, private organization is where I am needed.
I am grateful for the opportunity you have given me in the past 5 years, and hope that you were as pleased with me as I was to work here. Please understand that I am not leaving you with any sense of frustration, ill will, or resentment. I have been truly happy working here, and the opportunity I was recently offered was one I could not pass up.
Thank you again for your opportunity, and I will offer a 4-week notice so as to allow for a smooth of a transition as possible.

I like this approach myself. It does not burn bridges, you have already given the new place a tentative yes, and there is a reason the opportunity came to you in the first place. Pray about it and then head off to the new position, I suspect a blessing is on the way.

I'm a little late to the party. What was the decision? I am with Waynesworld - If the current company appreciated your work suh that you merited a raise, they should have been paying you at that level all along. No ill will on your part towards them, I would have to give my notice. Sometimes it is these circumstances where you find out just how much you're worth as an employee.

I am only 34 years old. I work for a huge company. They do not operate with a corporate feel. I have always seen people work for large corporations. They always seem to have to put up with tons of BS. So if you are putting up with lots of corporate BS go for the local job. The only question is what do the companies have in their future. Is the large corporation stable? Will the local company get bought out soon?
