I have a system but unmonitored(no monthly fee). If it goes off it doesn't disturb anyone but me and MY NEIGHBORS. I highly recommend adding an LOUD external alarm. Anything to alert your neighbors enough to at least get them to look out the window and see if anything is abnormal. At best a professionally monitored system will take 3-5 min's to get eyes on the scene.
Other than me forgetting its on and opening the door(I can turn it off within 5 seconds), its only gone off once, when the motion sensors picked up some helium balloons blown around by the AC or fans (or something). Neighbors called us within a minute.

HD DVR night vision, get a loop that's long enough for when you're gone. 7, 14, 30 day That's what I have with 8 cameras and a fake DVR. If they break in they might find the fake DVR but never the real one unless they want to pull out all the wires in the house. No mater what anybody gets, get the BEST CAMERAS you can. Ask yourself this question. Do you want to ID everybody in the pictures and are they good enough pictures to stand up in a court of law??? How many times have we watched a cop show on TV and the picrures from some of those store cameras was so bad we couldn't ever tell if the people were men or women?? THAT'S not what you want. Just curious as to cost of a system like yours installed ?
Today they run from $700 to $1,500 depending what you want to do. I put them in myself. It took me a day and half only because I was taking my time and I wanted to make sure the wiring would led to the fake DVR and my secert wiring would not be found.
You can get a good 2-4 camera system for $350 and up.
The good cameras today are much cheaper than the ones I bought and the newer systems allow you to view the cameras on your smart phone no mater where you are. Say your kid is coming home from school at a certain time and nobody home, you can check the whole house, yard, driveway, outhouses, barns, etc, etc and make sure it's all Ok BEFORE you kid gets home. same thing when your family is on it's way home from dinner, etc.

There is an 8 camera system with 1 Terrabite Hard Drive on Woot right now for $299.99. http://www.woot.com/ The problem is those cameras are 420 TVL an 480TVL is much, much better camera and doesn't cost that much more. Do a search on U-tube on 420TVL vs 480TVL, you can clearly see the difference.
This is what I was talking about. With the bad cameras you will never get a CLEAR SHARP picture that you need in COURT.

I had mine installed when we built the house in 1994, no cameras. Hard wired every door and window three motion sensors, a super loud siren/bullhorn/megaphone, and I replaced one of the 3 wired in smoke alarms with one that also does carbon monoxide. Wish I had cameras.
I really don't care if mine goes off by accident, we always reset it quick as can be and if someone wants to complain (a few have) because for sure, my siren is L O U D, I tell them, that's the idea.
I have tried to estimate puting cameras up under the 2nd story eaves, running wires into the attic, putting the recorder up on a platform so high you need a ladder, I think the fake recorder is a really good idea.
