Besides sawtooth,what is the best oak tree to plant and where do I get them?? One of my votes is gonna be Dwarf Chinkapin..

The r eason I ask is because Ive decided against planting crop trees for my grandson and planting wildlife trees instead on that extra 6 acres not being used. Ive got many of my cover and sanctuary problems solved,food plot issues worked out and now I just want to add quality trees with 25' spacing for maximum growth and room.Besides Sawtooths,what trees would the experts plant??

With that much acreage to work with, I think you would be best suited to focus on various trees that provided mast year-round. Apple varieties that drop at various times, various pear, crabapple, and persimmon. I would also look at the dunstan chestnut as another option.

I would look at Allegany chinkapin and Dunstan Chestnuts. We are planning on planting those 2 along with Butternut, Hazel nut, more Pecans, wild plums, peaches, mullberry, cherry, and apple. Variety is what we're after.

Agree with the others, go with variety. And group them in spots for hunting success. For example, plant a grouping of something that matures in late September/October in a good setup for bow season.

Man those Dunstan Chestnuts are expensive,I wonder if the cheaper hybrid chestnuts are just as good for deer trees??

I am curious about that too. I just purchased some land and will be planting some myself. Like anyone, I'd like to save some money if they work just as well.

Cherry barks grow fast shumard have good mast whites are slow growers. We planted about 65k 7 years ago and the cherry barks are twice the size of the whites walnuts and shumards
We planted bald cypress in the low areas and ive been very surprised by their growth with our rainfall average being around 20"'s below normal this year here in hardin co.
