I talked with a guy at work who took a really nice buck during bow season, told me he ranged the deer before make'n the shot & according to the range finder it was 52 yards, I asked what he shot I he replied Mathews.

This makes me really want to buy me a new bow, these bows today are twice the bows I shot years ago, they're more queit, faster, vibration free & just bomb proof.

So...how far do you consider your bow to be leathal in your hands & what are ya shoot'n (bow, poundage &FPS in ya know) ??

Just curious.

50yrds is my fatherst shot got complete pass thru. I shoot a mathews helim set at 73lbs with a 28.5in draw shooting right around 295fps with a slick trick and gold tip arrows. But with that setup it will kill deer father than that i am just to blind and shake to much to try any father shot than that

I shot a buck last year at 55 yards slight quartering away. Complete pass thru and went about 40 yards.

On paper my bow and arrow set up has enough KE to kill a deer at 120 yards lol

Don't think I will be trying that one

I'd shoot at 60yds if there was no wind and the deer was calm. Practice at 70yds 3-4 times a week. Longest shot to date was 47 yds and a complete pass through. SHooting an Elite Answer at #70, 29" DL.

I'm good out to 50, and very possibly 60 if everything was perfect. However, I do not have a 60, or 50 yard shot, anywhere I hunt so it's a mute point. My longest shot at an animal has been 38 yards. I regularly practice out to 100 yards—it makes those 20-40 yarders seem like chip-shots. I shoot a 29" Mathews Reezen—70#, 426 grain arrow, 284 fps and 76 ft.lbs of k/e.

I look for pinch points in my bowhunting setups that bottleneck deer movement to within 30 yards . Like the old saying goes , "archery is seeing how far away you can hit the bullseye , bowhunting is seeing how close you can get to it ."
Most kill shots on deer are still within 25 yards , I have done polls on numerous forums with hundreds of replies ,,and the average shot is around 20 yards .
The shooter makes the bow , you can shoot the best bow on the market , but if your shooting sucks , it won't make a difference .
Same goes for bowhunting . You can be great on a target range , but lack bowhunting skills , or be a poor shot on live game .

Ditto, good post is correct.

30 yards is my limit for now, I shake every time my heart makes a beat, but I dont shoot near as much as I did, practice makes perfect rite .

In our group, we have over 500 bow kills.
The average shot is 19 yards.

The farthest is 52.

Conditions have to be PERFECT.

Range positive, wind calm, no brush, relaxed and feeding deer, background noise like traffic or combine preferred.

Radar (as usual) said it best.

If you want to take long shots, archery is NOT for you!

WHAAAAAAT???????? You mean that taking 50-100 yard Spook Spann-style shots at live animals and then bragging about it so I can artificially inflate my own ego isn't cool and makes me look like a complete d-bag??? ;\) I've been doing it wrong all this time—maybe I should take up frisbee golf! \:D

30 yards is my maximum. I have determined this to be the case based on 19 years off practice and bow hunting. Your mileage may vary.

I'll share my experience. When I was younger and had little to no real responsibilities I had time to shoot my bow every day... and I did. It was a PSE NOVA I bought brand new for $249. I could literally consistently hit bottle tops at 40 yds. My biggest deer ever killed to date was killed with this bow at my longest ever range of 47yds. I had 100% confidence in the shot and the deer dropped. As he stood back up I let another fly and had two near perfect shots into the deer, neither pass through. He ran 10 yards and crashed.

Now I have a Mathews Monster that is 10 times the bow I used to shoot in nearly every aspect. I just don't have the time to practice I used to and now would never even consider a shot past 40 yds. Its just more proof in the shooter makes the shot not the bow.

Bows are faster than they ever have been. My hunting bow is the quietest I've ever owned. Yet as the years go on, I find my comfortable yardage on live animals shrinking.

I have enough KE and accuracy to probably kill a deer at 100 yards. I actually have a pin set just for 100 for target shooting...won me $142 at a tourney this year. Yet I've seen how much a deer can move at just 20 yards with a fast bow.

Save the long shots for target archery.

Bowhunting is about getting close.

I dont ever want to stick a deer & lose it, I think its my responsability to kill clean, even if I'm hunt'n coyotes I want the DRT, I'd have to be a really god shot & confident in my skills to try anything over 35 yards, maybe with a newer bow & plenty of practice I mite try to go longer.

My average yards for kills is 15. I have killed 3 deer 30 yards or more. My biggest buck was shot at 43 yards. I don't get to practice like I use to I don't really shoot past 25 yards now days. But I also prefer the close shots

Longest kill shot (and shot on an animal) was 40 yds. The thing was I was looking at this stump for an hour and figured it was right at 40 yds. well low and behold a big doe came walking up and stopped right next to that stump. Just could not help myself. think she went 50 yds at a dead run. Killed 2 at 35 yds and the rest 20 yds and under. To me the fun part is getting the deer close and not getting busted especially this time of year with liitle to no cover.

60 yards pretty much all day as long as it's not windy. But i am comfortable shooting at 80 yards but 60 is my farthest. I love shooting long distances tho.

I stand by my earlier post , archery is seeing how far you can still hit the bullseye , bowhunting is seeing how close you can get to it . ;\) I can also shoot long range in practice to refine my form and bow tuning , but there is a huge difference in the woods shooting at live game .
I'll take a slam dunk shot over a poke and hope shot at long distances . I rely more on bowhunting skills to close the distance .
Nothing wrong with taking long shots under the right conditions on relaxed deer in an open field , yet I'd rather not risk a wounded animal . That's just me . I have been doing it too long and know what can go wrong .

It's all relative. In most of my spots, 30 is about as far as I can shoot. If conditions were perfect, I'm 100% confident I can cleanly kill an animal at 60. My furthest kill shot thus far is 50. Deer ran 40 yards and piled up.

I practice at 40 yards and haven't had to shoot past 30 yards with the average being under 20 yards.

The deer I killed this year was at 9 yards.

Longest ever was 43 and I was proud of the shot. I too practice long range and enjoy it. I feel comfortable in perfect settings out to 60 (longest pin). However, 43 is the furthest shot I've taken.

I try hard to pick out trees that get them "top pin close" as my group of guys say. Thats when you know you've done it right and beat them hands down.

I have taken a few at 35 yds or so, but the majority were inside 20. Getting close is what makes it exciting to me. I have never taken pride in how many or how far, but I do take pride in shot placement and recovery. A season with 100 percent recovery is a successful season.
