A post on another forum got me thinking. If I was hunting Priest and walked in one morning while it was dark and did not notice someone had put out some corn. How much trouble would I get into? Or what if a non-hunter saw me walk in, goes over and pours out some corn and calls TWRA on me. It seems like this area has people around it that is not in favor of the hunting.

Too many what-ifs to answer.

If you have current concerns I would suggest getting in touch with the Area Manager and discuss the issues with him.

If Bait was discovered on public land by the twra I would hope they would investigate where it came from before arresting the first person that hunted near it. I have often had the same thoughts.

That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't think it would be the hunters job to scout the entire area for corn or some other bait to make sure he was legal.

I've got a buddy that puts alot of corn out against a WMA that borders his land. Almost every year there are baited area signs up right before the hunt

It keeps all the idiots from coming on his private property.
Works better than the no trespassing signs

Hate to post on TWRA s area and off topic.Seems to me if he is keeping people from hunting public land then he is guilty of hunter harassment ????Thats not fair to honest legal hunters.

Seriously. SCN/TWRA, please investigate fredfred and his "buddy" and prosecute if you can establish that fredfred is telling the truth.

Makes me wonder, fredfred, that you still call him a "buddy."

Oh cry me a river! I never said i approve of it or that i helped. But even if i did it's perfectly legal to bait on his own property as long as he doesn't hunt over it. TWRA makes the rules and you guys cry when someone uses them to there favor.

There is nothing illegal with putting food on your own land if the intent is to feed wildlife and you do not hunt over it.

But (in my non-TWRA opinion) it is definitely illegal if your primary intent is to interfere with lawful hunting activity and thereby harass hunters.

You would hope, I know a man that use to hunt doesn't any more because of what I am about to tell you. he was around the age of 63 when he decided to go bow hunting on Ckickasaw in Lauderdale Co. He was sitting on an old disk or some kind of farm equipment on the edge of a field. when the GW walked up and checked his license and then asked him why he was hunting over bait.
He said he wasn't and new nothing about any bait. The GW began to write out a ticket and my friend asked just where is this bait? GW pointing to the other side of the field some 400 yards away and said it's over there just inside the woods.
My friend at this point said look buddy I am bow hunting I just walked up and sat down I know nothing about any bait over on that side of the field.
GW doesn't matter if you know or not, your hunting over it! How could I be? I couldn't shoot one with a riffle that far away.
GW writes ticket and told him see you in court.
Friend goes to court Judge and GW rakes him over the coals and make shim feel like a criminal. he trys to make them see his side but the GW explans to him if he is hunting over a trail that leads to bait no matter how far from the bait you are, you are hunting over bait.
Now think about that, If you are hunting on a deer trail that leads to bait no matter how far you are from said bait then you can be fined for hunting over bait!!!
Now think about this all trails cross another trail at some point so by that ruling a corn pile could be at the far east end of Tennessee and I could be hunting a trail in west Tennessee and be considered to be hunting a trail that leads to that pile of corn.
Long story short he did not beat it. he was fined and his hunting privileges were revoked for one year!
He has never hunted again.
In my mind that GW had some serious issues, so did the judge.
But that is the way the law reads and that is how that GW interpreted it.

All I know is this Baiting thing has way too much gray area involved. TWRA cleaned it up alittle with the 250 yard rule but that also opened a new can of worms. The only way to prevent people from inadvertenly getting in trouble is to legalise it and forget about it. That would also free up 1000's of hours in Officers time

Not the only way. We have also looks into making it illegal to put any type of supplemental feed out for wildlife. That would clear up the confusion as well.
