Tonight my son (17 yr old) shot and is sure he hit a deer. Both him and his buddy looked for the deer but didn't find it. My question is can I (without a big game license) go in the morning and look for it or do I need a license? Letting him out of school is out of the question due to recent illness and a hunting trip to Ohio. Just want to be sure not to run in to problems.

IMO, it would be difficult for you to do it without a license. If you are armed in case the deer is alive, there is no doubt you need a license (unless it is on your own land). You will also need to meet the blaze orange requirements.

The problem continues if you find the deer. Tagging requirements require you to invalidate a temporary kill tag before field dressing, moving, or transporting a deer. You would not be legal with your son's tag due to laws making it illegal for him to transfer the license/tag to another person.

I would suggest contacting the local officer and running it by them. I suspect some descretion could apply to this case, but when you get down to the cross the T and dot the I legalities there are several issues for you.

If you walk around with the blaze orange and find it then you can either take him to it after school or get a hunter from her to go pick it up for you. If you were in Middle TN I know I would. But As scn said if you talk to the GW he may make it easier. With the temps as low as they got depending on shot you should have some time.

I called the area office the next morning and they got me in touch with the game warden. He gave me the OK to look for it but I couldn't have a weapon on me and I couldnt move the deer except to hide it . After a 3 mile hike without any sign of a hit or a deer to be found I called it a day. I am one of those "full figured" guys and I am paying for it today.
