I have an old Marlin 336CS that my mom and dad bought me as a teenager. I have never taken a deer with it, but I want to. Can someone recommend a good round as far as accuracy goes! I really though about the Hornady Leverevolution, but I have heard some bad reviews. Any ideas?

Leverevolution shoots great out of my marlin. I can get 1.5 MOA all day. Does a fine job on deer as well.

I couldn't get the Hornadys to group out of my 336Y. So I went back to 170gr Winchesters. But i have heard others who had great results with the Hornady. I got half a box of them you can have and try.

Nobody can tell you what will be accurate in your individual rifle. Buy some ammo and see how it shoots. Every rifle is an individual. Some are fairly accurate with many loads. Some of these will shoot many loads to about the same point of impact while others will shift all over the target every time you change loads - but still give decent accuracy with all the loads. Bottom line is that you have to try it in YOUR rifle. Not exactly fun at the cost of ammo these days but that's how it is. \:\)

I just use winchester super X power point 150gr, the cheap loads, won't shoot much past 100 but that's mainly because I don't get to practice much. Have killed 2 deer with these loads so far, 8 yards and 15-ish yards

x2. Start off with what ammo you can find and keep shooting til you find what brand the gun likes.

Used to have a marlin 336.
Hated the 150gr. could hardly get it on paper.

LOVED the 170gr corelock round nose. 1.5" groups at 100

I have heard more people say their marlin 30-30 like the heavier 170gr bullets than the 150gr.

Hmmm now that I think of it....Seems to work that way with most calibers.

For the 30-30 used on deer, I would use the cheapest load I could get with either 150 or 170 grain bullets. The 30-30 is a low velocity cartridge - which means it isn't fast enough to "blow up" bullets - so you don't need any fancy controlled expansion bullet. Just pickup whatever is cheapest at your local store and see how it shoots.

Once you find a load that shoots accurately enough to make you happy, buy a couple of boxes of it and you are set for a while.

Good advice 257w. You will have to experiment lawdog. That's the only way to find your pet load. If your rifle will shoot a variety of loads well, you have a gem!
