I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask,I'm not sure if y'all can share any info but I am graduating in two weeks with a bachelors in wildlife biology and have opted to take fisheries classes too so I could be certified. I have been a temp employee with fish and wildlife for the past two years here in west TN refuges. they are trying to place me but with budgets being cut the future doesn't look to promising. do you know if any slots are opening soon with TWRA and have any opinion on which I should pursue employment with. Any help or input would be appreciated!

I am not aware of any positions in the near future. It will be next August before we hire officers again.

Thanks for the info, is TWRA pretty competitive, I'm really only aware of how the F&W service is and its so hard to get hired in outright. either have to work temp or intern. the fed budget is so bad I've been told veterans are applying for entry level jobs?

Things are tough all over. I would strongly suggest graduate school if you want to be competitive in the future. Sure you can get a job with a BS if you are top of the heap, but why not get an advanced degree? Most programs will pay your tuition and you can earn a stipend to boot, and you get great experience. If you have been working with fish and wildlife, you may have run into Baron Crawford out there in west tennessee. If so, he got his start with the park service after doing graduate work on red wolves in the park. If you are at UT Martin, then you can talk to Eric pelren. He did his graduate work at UTK and ended up staying in the UT system. The majority of my friends that I went to graduate school with ended up working with or for the agencies they were researching with.
Graduate school opens up so many opportunities, you really should consider it.

Yeah graduate school is a thought, really.just ready to be done I transferred into martin and lost 20 credits that didn't transfer, then I took additional fish classes for the other option. all I all I've spent a extra 1.5 years almost as long as I woulda done a graduate program. I have met barren he is a nice guy I worked under Randy cook actually in west ten refuges met a lot of contacts but just seems they have to wait on Washington to know where and if I'll get to go somewhere. if I wouldn't have transferred and lost credits I would do graduate program. I just need a job now honestly my parents don't help.any with college I've had to do it without any help, with saying that ha ha I'm a broke college kid needing to make some money. I've always. worked during school just need.better pay. currently I work part time for the city at park and recreation department. I at.least do have a backup, a guy is retiring and they are hiring me full time in 3 weeks. it s just not what I wanna do in life , trying to get a wildlife job. just sucks fish and wildlife have me certified with equipment and other stuff, you would think with the time and money invested they would find something for me but who knows what will happen

yeah haha, well I grew up learning you better love your job and what you do or you will be miserable. definitely something I've wanted to do since I was a kid always said the only thing is go to school for is it and that's what happened. form the time I've spent with fish.and wildlife it really is.rewarding just by going out everyday on the refuges. just nice to be out there everyday doing stuff you.like to do and better yet get paid for it!

I understand your concerns, I was in EXACTLY the same boat. Look at it this way. Now is the time in your life when you can afford to be broke, if that makes sense. When you end up married with children, a mortgage, car payments, etc. you lose the options.
Like I said most graduate programs in wildlife will cover your tuition room and board, and pay you a stipend. I was literally paid to go to school, and I made enough to get by. When I got out, I had a lot more options.
If you are seriously looking for something right now, the US Forest Service is hiring people for fire crews all over the country. There were some positions here in Tennessee too. Check out USAjobs.

Don't forget to look at the Department of Health we have some jobs at our Labs not sure of the title but when I walked through the lab I saw them looking at water samples and where they cut the fish up. I told them next time they go collect the fish to give me a call as I think as a budget director I should observe that first hand. They just laughed.
