Now that the rut is waning....what will be harder to kill, a mature doe or a mature buck? Are bucks inherantly more weary?

I tried 2 different times to kill a mature doe this weekend. Just could not get a clear shot on her period. Every time she stopped she was behind a tree laughing.

Does are darn smart, you may see an old doe more often than an old buck but she will pick u out and stay out of range and bust you all the time

People say deer have a short term memory. I disagree. Old does remember. I have had the same doe with her doe fawn and her last years doe fawn , all 3 running together. Saw them 2nd week of muzzleloader twice. She busted me once due to the wind. The next afternoon the 3 fed 200 yards away. The old doe looked at my permanent box blind numerous times. Haven't hunted that area since. When I do, she is getting a dirt nap via a .300 win mag!

an old mature doe is the smartest deer in the woods. she not only has to look out for herself but her offspring as well.

Buck mature does are crazy smart but so are mature bucks and i don't think they are as nocturnal as mature bucks are. Is the reason i say this.

start hammering those does and see how nocturnal they can become.

The area I has a very high deer population and a lot of hunting pressure. 50+ deer per square mile and on a Saturday you hear shot after shot. We've bagged 8 of hour 100 acre farm, mostly does. Lots of large cutovers all over the place so deer don't have to be seen if they don't want to. My stands have been cooling down. Sat day night I switched it up and took my climber to a creek crossing bordering a cutover...a spot a few hundred yards from my best stand. I had never hunted here before and bagged an old doe at dark. I'm wondering now if I shouldn't go back for an all day sit.

Exactly. Although some deer are naturally more nocturnal (hence survive to older ages), most mature bucks learned to be nocturnal or they wouldn't have survived to maturity. Put the hammer down on does for their entire lives and they can be just as nocturnal and even harder to kill than mature bucks.
As an experiment, we shot every doe we saw (when legal) on my property for 10 straight years. Towards the end of that experiment, we were killing three times as many mature bucks as we were mature does. We still had mature does (trail-camera pictures), but they never moved during daylight and were almost never killed by hunters.

Mature buck hands down. We too killed 50 does a year off 600 acres for 5 or 6 years in a row, and while they were markedly more nocturnal and smarter than in the beginning, nowhere near as hard to see and kill during daylight hours as a fully mature buck, which had also been targeted along with does. (just for reference these were almost totally Archery kills) Its the more social lifestyle the does lead that make them easier to kill imo!
