I think I have slayed enough deer thus far and its time to relax and pop a few squirrels.
How long should I keep that squirrel in my pocket until its time to gut him?

I just take em home whole, gut and skin em, done it to 3 or 4, still in the freezer somewhere lol. I gotta boil em down till the meat falls off the bone, then make something out of them. I did not like the taste of squirrel when fried.

They stay in my game vest till I get home. If it gets warm and I'm hunting for a while they can be a little smelly on the inside when you gut them. Meat is always good though. Straight into a brine after gutting. Then cooked or frozen.

It depends....on a Warm day (august) not more than a couple of hours. This time year, if I hunt all day I will do a cleaning after lunch and a cleaning after the evening hunt.
BTW. I never take my squirrels home to clean. I use the nearest creek! I always take ziplock bags with me to put the squirrels in.

Here is what I have taken to doing. Squirrels are much easier to skin when they are warm. Significantly easier. I carry a game quarter bag in my pack and will skin the squirrels immediately upon killing them. If I am in a hot area with lots of activity, I'l hold off on gutting until later. If its pretty slow, I'll do that on the spot. Regardless, I stuff them in the game bag (where they can cool and breathe) until I get home and then they get vacuum sealed for the freezer or go straight into a brine.
Its a different way than most people do it, but I prefer it 10-1 over skinning when they are cold.

Put them in a crock pot with some salt for about 2-3 hours, THEN fry them covered in flour and lightly salted.
