"Next year the elk drawing application period for the North Cumberland WMA elk hunt will no longer take place during April-May, rather it will become part of the regular Big Game WMA draw process (June-July)."

Is the elk hunt going to a point system? If so, will the people with points already be ahead of all those who don't have them?

We will be accepting applications concurrently with WMA next year. However, they will still be seperate quota hunts. The priority point systems WILL NOT change for either quota hunt. WMA will continue with it's graduated priority point system and the elk will continue without a priority point system at all.

Is there some plan for expanding the number of lisc? Like a long term projecting model that you are using?

Yes, we have developed population models and have run multiple harvest scenarios with the data that we have. Unfortunately the population growth appears very sensitive when we add cow harvest and is somewhat sentitive when we increase the bull harvest. We will constantly be updating our models but for the time being it appears we will holding steady until we see more growth in the population.

I don't believe so. It's probably just a product of starting with so few animals. We started with 167 elk. This is hypothetical but let's say reproduction leads to an increase of 1/3 the population, that means maybe 50 calves were hitting the ground in the first few years. Kentucky on the other hand released over 1,500 elk. That means they were looking at 500 calves hitting the ground each year. Although the percent increase is the same, a population that starts much smaller takes a lot more time to grow to large numbers.

What is the cost of the relocation? I would think that places that are overrun with elk would be happy to thin the herd. I know when my sister lived in Estes park CO they have hundreds of elk in the city, more of a nuisance. Did we use electronic monitoring on the relocated ones to watch them the first years? I know there are some relocating of buffalo in the northern states that seem to cause a big uproar for the farmers. Do we have the same resistance from the farmers around our spots?
