Id try to kill the wounded one for sure rather a good quick death then an infection and bacteria getting to him. It's the right thing to do if given the opportunity.

If he had a little dose of that blue medicine sprayed on there he'd make it for sure. Probably will anyway. Ive had road rash worse than that and it fixed me up. LOL

I'm curious about how you can be certain he has shot with a small caliber rifle. Thats a big hole there .

There are "frangible" bullets in mostly handgun calibers-some are 224 caliber bullets that you must handload. You get a thin brass shell over a hollow point bullet traveling upwards of 3600+ FPS and when it hits something, it comes apart. Much like what you see on that deer. A bullet with enough power to create that wound would have broken the shoulder so almost as a certainty it was one of the frangible bullets. Because the deer is still walking around I would wager someone shot the deer with a pistol. A frangible rifle load would have broken the shoulder.

I still don't think anyone can say for sure what caused the wound.Unless the know for sure what caused .AS in made the shot or knows who made it. My 1st thoughts were he was in a fight and lost,or maybe a arrow hit a shoulder bone and bounced off.I've seen a lot of deer shot in the field and at the processors.Don't recall ever seeing one that big in that location.
It looks bad I would most likely put him down. They are tough critters who knows you might see him next year with a big scar.
