Have used several different brands over the yrs. Bottom line............You get what you pay for.
I have yet to see a basic radio with advertised distance (say up to 4 miles) function at that distance in the woods/mtns.
The only radio's I have seen perform like that are the last ones I purchased, but they are a commercial (police/rescue type) radio with FCC licensing. Two of them have 2 channel, the other two have 4 channel freq. NOT CHEAP, I bought them at an auction from a construction company.

I used to use radios hunting all the time. Tried several different brands. The Midlands were far superior to the other brands available. These were the GXT ### models in GMRS (or GRMS) as opposed to FRS. Offered more privacy channel options and higher wattage.
The stuff FULLDRAWXX75 refers to is what I consider high dollar, professional strength.
The radios we used were advertised at a couple miles range, but that is assuming flat, unobstructed terrain. We used them in the woods and they were good at easily half mile+. They were in the $60 - $80 range, I would guess.
