I am getting a ar soon and would like to use it for deer hunting also. I have read a lot about both and am leaning towards a RRA in 6.8 but I would like to here more pros and cons. Also is everybody crimping their ar reloads or not. Personally I don't crimp anything in rifle cartridge. Also the 6.5 and 6.8 use the same lower ar the .223 so I will also get a .223 upper also.

6.8 for anything under 200 yards. 6.5 if shots may be over 200. Don't get me wrong the 6.8 can do over 200 but the 6.5 bc is much better. If you get the 6.8 make sure to get the spc ll chamber. 6.8 components are more readily available than for the 6.5. Plus you really need a longer barrel to get the most out of the grendel. I put a light crimp on my AR loads. I personally like the 6.8 better hunting.

That is pretty good advice above. I have a 6.8 SPCII and know from experience it can kill deer. But shot placement is EVERYTHING. I have had them drop where they stood, I have had some run 100 yards, and I have had some get away and show up in the field the next day.
I did a little bit of research on the 6.5 but the most promising thing I saw was not the grendel but the Creedmore. It is a favorite for bench rest shooters and is very capable of handling long range.
As for the range of the 6.8, yes inside 200 is your sweet spot. But I took a 200+ buck at 300 so it can be done. If you are interested in the 6.8, check out 68forums. They have GREAT advice and its the only other forum I contribute to other than TNdeer.

I have travelled that road before- I like the case shape and taper of the 6.8 but I like the sectional density and ballistics of the 6.5 bore. I think the 6.8 case is better supported with magazines also. So I compromised and had a 6.5/6.8 wildcat built. It has turned out well but either of the choices you mentioned would do the same. If I were going with one or the other I would choose the Grendel because of the 6.5 bore. Rock river makes nice rifles.
