While climbing up the tree this morning, my stand slipped about 3 inches, causeing me to loose my footing and fall out of the stand. Thank goodness I had my saftey harness attached while I was climbing. I was able to quickly get back in the stand but it took nearly 30 minutes to get up the nerve to get my feet back in the sturips. Somehow during all of this my pull rope come unattached. When I finaly got back to the ground I just sat there. A big doe came up and I shot her at 20 yards with my crossbow. She ran about 25 yards and stopped. She started to wobble and went down on her front legs and then layed all the way down. She layed there for over an hour with her head up and I could not get another shot and would not move cause I did not want to spook her. Suddenly she got up and ran off. I went and looked for my arrow but could not find it. NO BLOOD ANYWHERE!!! Found where she had been laying and no blood their either. I don't think I will be getting up in a treestand for a while or slinging arrows at any more deer ever. I've shot 9 deer with arrows, over the years, and only found three. I just don't like those odds. I know what some of you are going to say, "Thats bowhunting." That might be bowhunting, but for me that just don't make it right. I'm sure most have better luck than me and a much higher recovery rate. I have shot over 60 deer with firearms and only lost 2. And even those 2 still bother me. I'm not trying to bash bowhunters, I'm just saying it ain't for me anymore. Sorry for the long post, rant over.

I'll have to say, recovering only 1 of every 3 you hit is not very good. Hit them in the vitals and they usually leave a better blood trail then being shot with a firearm and die just as fast.

Man, forget about the deer! I'm just glad you were wearing your harness! I hate those little "slips" that sometimes happens with climbing stands or an improperly hung set of climbing sticks. They will about give you a heart attack when they slip, won't they? I've got several climbers, but the past few years I've been carrying in a Pack-n-Stack backpackable ladder stand. It weighs just 2 lbs more than my TreeLounge climbing stand, but has the safety/stability of a ladder stand. It also takes less time to assemble and be hunting than any of my climbers and at $80 was a LOT less expensive than my climbers.
And yes, you may lose a few more deer with a bow or crossbow than you might with a rifle. If the bow/crossbow thing isn't for you I wouldn't worry about it. Just use what you are comfortable with. This is my first year to use a crossbow through all the deer season, and I have had 2 huge trophy bucks just out of bow range...which they would have been on the ground if I had my rifle. But for me this hunting year is about being laid back and just enjoying the hunt. I hope you can find that same peace while you are in the woods.
I would think that doe is dead somewhere. She may have gotten up and done a last ditch run because the wind swirled and she winded you...or maybe not. I'd do a fan sweeping search out at least 400 yards or so to see if she didn't lay down again somewhere and expire.
Once again, just glad you were okay after the 'fall'. Stay safe brother.

Maybe you should try a crossbow? Me personally, once the season changes, I follow suit though. No way would I be in the woods right now with anything but a rifle.
