I am thinking about buying a handgun for whitetail hunting. I have always thought that it would be fun to try. Anyone with experience in handgun hunting? What caliber, barrel length, and no scope or scoped. I don't want a cannon but enough to get the job done. Maybe a 41 mag. I can reload so the sky is the limit.

"handguns" in rifle calibers don't count

Personally, I always wanted a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 with the 9.5 inch barrel.

I carry a 4in super blackhawk 44mag everytime im in the woods deerhunting. Its hard to beat a 44mag for close range deer. I dont much care for a scope on a handgun i like the irons

Look on gunbroker or on your local listings for a 41 magnum super Blackhawk Hunter. The hunter is no longer made very much, but it comes with a 7.5" barrel and has a built in optics rail with scope rings included. Also has good looking iron sights.
I was going to buy a 41 mag very recently, but changed my mind to a 44 mag since I don't reload (yet).
Everyone I talk to says to avoid pistol scopes and use either a red dot or iron sights. I am also buying a Primos trigger release monopod to use with it to extend my effective range while on still hunts.

Love my ruger in 454 casual. I have a red dot 2 power on it shot several deer with it out to 75 yards, it is a fun gun to hunt with, and stick 45 colts in it to have some fun trigger time.
