Yesterday, while hunting public land, I gut shot a big 8 point. While tracking blood I hear 3 shot in the direction of the blood trail not far from me. I walked up on this guy. I asked him if he saw a big deer come through. He said no. Said he just shot a five point. He tells me good luck with the tracking and we say our goodbyes. An hour later my blood trail runs into pieces of toilet paper on the ground.Ive only gone about 50 yards from where I talked to the guy. I run out of blood and start walking around, when I walk up on his 5 point, field dressed. I go back and start trailing again. Then I find the deer I shot, field dressed! I have no cell phone service. I took pics of the buck and left. It was a nice buck. Ive got a bigger one on the wall. Im just mad that the guy lied to me. And left me to keep tracking knowing the 8 point was only 75 yards from where we were standing. I didnt stay because Im sure he went to get a buddy and a cart and i didnt want a confrontation in the woods over a deer. I called the game warden and gave him what i thought was the guys tag number. GW said there was not enough proof to go on. GW did call me back and say that he ran the tag and the guy did check in an 8 point. Win some lose some i guess. Just had to rant a little. Thanks for reading.

Don't take this the wrong way but your shot probably wouldn't have ended up with a recovery. He killed the buck, its his. He should have been honest with you though. Hang in there, plenty of fish in the sea...

Westtntoms, I was 500 yards off the road in thick, thick stuff. I couldnt have drug it out alone. Carlos, thats how I feel. He was probably worried because he has 2 bucks on the ground.

So then his buddy checked in a deer for him? Hmm.
I feel sorry for you. I think I would have confronted him, but that's just me and probably not the best advice. Were gutted both bucks tagged or just the 8 point?

Did the buck you shot have any other bullet holes besides your gut shot? I definetely would've had the GW on his way telling him he had 2 bucks down and was trying to get away with taking your deer!!! I would have confronted him for sure!!!

I just reread the post, didn't catch the whole thing the first time. Do you think he shot both bucks as they went by him or maybe shot the first one from his stand and then shot yours? Bad sitution but there aint much you can do legally.

I had a friend who shot a nice buck and it would have been his biggest and first he made a good shot but did not take a second for some reason.. We blood trailed the deer about 200 yds to a gut pile and fallowed from there to a road

If you gut shot it, you should be thankful that he put the deer down for you, and let him deal with the legal ramifications.

Carlos, I think he shot his first then shot mine when he came by later. I did get pics of the 8 point and neither deer was tagged. My cousin said I should have stuck my tag way up in the deers eardrum. I didnt think of it at the time. I didnt check for any more bullet holes. His front leg was shot in half.

That hindsight is a cruel mistress. I bet this situation dont happen again to you though. Sorry to hear about all this. You would hope that all hunters have the same morals and values as most of us but unfortunately that aint always the case.

Np dirtyBear. Im a little smarter now. I thank God im a Christian. Could have been alot worse. I feel like he finnished the deer off so I consider it his. But he broke the law by shooting 2 bucks and he lied to me and left me to track another 2 hours when he knew full well the deer was dead. Bonehead; I was very tired(been tracking for 3 hours) and I was 500 yards from the road. No way I could have dragged a deer that far.And I never spoke to him again after he went to get his buddy with the cart.

Actually, a similar thing happened to me with a very very nice 6x6 elk in the BLM land north and west of Craig, CO. I shot the Bull, he ran, another guy nailed him with a 7 mag and the elk went down. I tracked the blood to where these guys were gutting my elk and we DID have a confrontation. There were 3 of them and one took off to get a game warden on CB radio.

Long story short, GW showed up, heard both sides, I LOST. TOld me I shot him, but they killed him.

If it weren't for that 5-point in the story, there would have been nothing *illegal* about what happened (just immoral due to the lying).

But he did break the law by killing them both.

I'll let this be a soapbox moment for a minute -

Every TN hunter should enter the Poaching Hotline # into their cell phone. You will inevitably have some sort of problem come up where you witness an illegal act, and having quick contacts is the only hope of being able to stop the offender.

Look here for the #'s to your particular region:

You give up mch easier than I would have! I would have called the local GW and informed him of the guy shooting 2 deer and would have let him sort this one out.

What more does the game warden need?I get so tired of reading that on here. Why would the gw not come out to check on the guy to see he shot both bucks?seems people call to turn poachers in every year and the gw never even goes.many stories on here of people calling the poaching line and never getting a return call.not trying to bash TWRA but i would think they would go to calls like this.

I did call the GW and he told me that his buddy would probably check one in and he the other. And it would be my word against his. GW did run his tags and called me back and said he did check in an 8 point.

I would have thanked him for gutting my 8 pt and started dragging since he said he only shot a 5 pt. Now if he said he shot the 8 pt then you would have been out of luck. did the GW say anything about his buddy checking in the 5 pt?

Tough one. Sounds like he took one to many. I would have waited for him just so I knew he lied, then quickly walked back to my truck and pulled all four valve stems from his tires. Just kidding about that last part.
