Was doing some aimless internet meanderings earlier and was wondering who out there actually uses a shooters log? When I get my rifle back from the local shop, I am wanting to track the bullet out to about 500 yds. So this way I can mark my scope turrets for different situations. Anyone do this, and does it really help?

I do, that is the only way to be sure when your shooting any distance.

its a must for me while shooting my Shiloh Sharps .40-65 black powder cartridge, the fun is in reading the wind and setting the horizontal reading, the vertical setting is not that difficult

Well my goal is to have this rifle my designated long range yote/paper puncher. My buddys farm is 500 yards of open space that we can use as known target ranges. Which is nice. I just wanna really push the limits of my rig for my own personal satisfaction really.

For the longest time I had my dope sheet laminated to my stock on my 06.
Back when you had to accurately guess ranges using your own skills, your dope sheet was critical. You had to estimate the range and then consult your dope sheet for holdover-I literally never twisted an elevation screw in the field.
Switch from a 150 to a 120 grain round, check dope sheet, adjust elevation/windage for say 200 yard zero, start sounding like a rabbit with a broken leg and get ready.

I have about worn the numbers off the M1 knobs on my 4.5-14 LR/T,,I used to shoot a lot using holdover out to 500 but not any more,,been shooting a lot lately with the 338 LM at 700-1200 and you can not do that with holdovers,,

Its critical for shooting past 300. And its really easy to do. most people have no idea how to apply ballistics, but a little effort goes a long way in making one shot connections at distance. Use a ballistics calculator online to get your dope close, then go out to the range and test it out. Does your scope have any other stadia marks?

Been using a data book for a bit now. It's a great way to get the most out of your range time. I track my shooting, then can analyze my problems and come up with a plan to address them the next range session. In the process I have been creating a dope sheet for my rifle and load that has known data, not just some guess from a ballistics program.
Doing this will give you tons of confidence in your own ability and the rifle/ammo combos ability.
I'm using items I got from Impact Data Books. They're mostly geared towards tactical/precision shooters but the principals and techniques are the same. Good shooting is good shooting.
