When hunting public land plan on walking a good 1/2 mile or more away from the road. not always... I'm ona rather popular WMA right now, I came in before dawn and haven't seen another hunter, saw 2 deer in range but no shot due to branches, and only hiked 5 minutes from the truck. Catman your WMA's are a little different down there . The ones he's speaking of around here have low deer densities and extreme hunting pressure during gun season . But there are those spots you speak of that most people will walk right by and not hunt .

Hope for the dumbest deer on the planet to walk by until you start learning. There is absolutely no substitute for experience. I have been hunting deer for over thirty years, and I am still learning. Sometimes the stars align and it is a piece of cake. Other times, I couldn't buy a deer if they were selling them at Walmart.
The best thing you could do is learn an area. Focus on one area at a time, learn it inside and out, and be patient. If you put in enough time, good things will happen, eventually.
Also, when an area says open with the statewide seasons, it means exactly that. You can hunt there any time the season is open. Chuck swan is quota only. If you do not draw a hunt, you cannot hunt there. Same thing with oak ridge and many other WMAs. Catoosa will be having an open gun hunt next month, but it is buck only and there are antler restrictions.
Good luck, and be patient. It took me five years before I even saw a deer in the woods, and another two before I killed one.

I hunted public land for 25 years before I was lucky enough to get to hunt some privite land.No doubt about it deer can sometimes be found close to the road .From my experence those opurtunities are few and far between.Find the right spot and let other hunters that come in late or go out early can be a good plan. If you're young and single and can hunt all day find a good spot and stay put all day your odds will be increased. Sunday morning after Thanksgiving week most the weekend warriors are headed Back home.Later in the season alot of WMA's will be seeing less pressure. Those cold wet nasty days when the hunting is not soo pleasant are good low pressure days. Also the Days when a really Big Football game or 2 are on the tube.

I'm willing to wager that the alot of folks will hang it up here soon. Colder temps, fewer sightings do this. Heck, I took more time off this weekend because I'm just not seeing em. I've hunted Cove Creek, had success there before they screwed things up logging. Good luck!

TN assuming their deer are like my deer, and forget about the lower deer density. Sorry about that. But yes there are going to be those spots where people walk right by. That morning I bumped 2 deer on either side of the trail probably 50 yards from the truck, at most. I almost considered sitting down right there. It's those dang cedar glades, the deer love em. You'll be sitting there on the ground (no room for treestand) and the deer silently come sneaking through with no crunching on the leaves, they just appear.

several of my best public land stands are where i can watch traffic go by on the highway. the local state trooper used to look for me there and wave as he passed by. and i AM in east tennessee
