Ive got several acres that is an open rolling hillside(semi-level) that Im wanting to plant trees for timber use for my son maybe to harvest in 25 years. Ive already planted over 500 wildlife trees as in lots of persimmons,sawtooths and hybrids,fruits of all kinds that are caged,ect. What is a good tree that will make good timber,have a decent market and help my wildlife overall but thats not the main focus for this spot.Thoughts?? I was thinking about poplar,black walnut,have considered paulownia.

First...pawlonia is invasive. Do not plant it. It has little wildlife value, and there is not much of a market for it.
Second if you really want something in 25 years, you better be thinking pines. The only real advantage would be cover.
Yellow-poplar probably only get to 10-14 inches in diameter in your time frame, at that is on the best sites. Also, yellow-poplar has little wildlife value, unless you count it's value as a tree stand site.
As for the walnut......much longer time to harvest. Never in 25 years, even on the best sites.

Diehard,you you have any reccomendations?? What trees could I plant that would be worth the most in say 30 years?? Im not certain Ill be alive but It might be a fun investment for my son..Im 44.

Great info diehard!!Also without a little shade your trees will not grow as tall and will branch out more than they would in a natural forest setting. Short trees with limbs all over them have very little value to loggers compared to straight tall trees.

Read it. There is a chapter for each tree. It will tell where it grows, what site is best, age diameter relationship etc. then you can make an informed decision based on your property and your timeline

Seems like for good quality hardwoods, you have to plant trees for your GRANDchildren. We have a nice stand of oaks we planted about a dozen years ago. I joke with my wife that if we live to our nineties and run out of money that they might be worth something then.

If you have "several acres" it will be next to impossible to have a logger cut trees, as the cost to set up will exceed the value of the trees. If you have 10 or more acres it would be worthwhile to ask a Tennessee Div. of Forestry Area forester to visit your property to give you advice. I did that 20 years ago and planted pines as a result. We just sold a 40% thinning for $300 per acre. We have 135 acres in pines. Hardwoods take 70 years to reach financial maturity except for maybe Tulip Poplar which would be less. Quality hardwoods can bring $1,000 - $3,000 per acre. Low quality hardwoods may bring nothing. Pines grow well on poor sites, where hardwoods won't grow quality trees. Your area forester can tell you in about a minute if the site is a good or poor site for hardwoods.

I have 237 acres in one spot,more in another.I just have this area(5 or 7 acres) thats not being used for anything and was thinking Id plant something that might be OK to cut in my lifetime. Im thinking about walnut trees and leaving the place to my grandson.I do know now that my timeframe isnt too good for me to use the trees in my lifetime.So,since I like to squirrel hunt and I like walnut trees I thought it might be a cool thing.
