Lots of rumors on Gruden and the UT job. Seems like everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows Gruden's wife's hairdresser.

Gruden is UT's (and my) first choice. I believe he is still the leading candidate, but if he is on the market, UT has to compete against some NFL teams that would pay in the 7-8 mil range. Best he is probably going to get at UT is 5mil per season. If Gruden lands at UT for less than he could have made in the NFL, it will be for the love of the university or not being a slave to an owner like Jerry Jones.

Of all the others mentioned, assuming they are interested, Gary Patterson is probably the best candidate. He has an awesome and consistent record against some strong competition, and is at an age where he is probably trying to decide if he stays put and makes a career out of TCU or moves on to a larger program.

Bob Stoops, Charlie Strong, and Jimbo Fisher (in that order) would be solid hires.

Jim Tressel
has a great record as a head coach, but I believe his age pushes him down the list.

Jim Mora, Jr., Dan Mullen, and Butch Jones are even further down the list than Tressel.

I was a Fulmer fan in the beginning, but after the '98 season, I started to doubt his abilities. I saw some things that scared me...mainly some very poor play calling, lack of a good strength/nutrition program (remember Nebraska man-handling us TWICE?), and lack of disclipine off the field.

Having said that, I would be happy with bringing Fulmer back vs. hiring Mora, Mullen, or Jones. He has had some time off to see what he could have done differently, and I believe hinsight being what it is, he could get things headed in the right direction.

If UT can't get a BIG name like the first five mentioned in my first post, I say bring Fulmer back and give him an open checkbook.

?? Not sure what you mean by that, but the only reason I'm mentioning his name is someone on here says he is in the running for the job. I doubt he is.

A show cause pretty much in a sense bans a coach from being hired for x anount of years, like pearl and kevin sampson from Indiana. Think about this, butch jones was fired for scandal at unc, mullen now that hes in league play has struggled, strong doesnt have a great record against ranked teams and patterson isnt a very young guy. Having said that they are all upgrades, but i donate every year and want a return to glory so to speak, so i dont want gambles or chances, pay good money for a good coach

51 years is young enough that it wouldn't be a factor at any school.

I agree. However, if they are going to take chances, I say do it with Fulmer. I don't think it will come to that (as the school just added another $18 mil to the coaching budget this week), but if it does, I would rather go with what we know than another Dooley or Bill Battle.

I don't care who the coach is next year they are in for an uphill battle. Have you seen the 2013 schedule? 4 wins tops if they play like they did this year.

Based on this year, 4-5 wins next season would be all we should expect. However, with a good hire, 6-7 wins shouldn't be a surprise, and with some great preparation and coaching, 8, maybe 9 wins are a possibility.

Not crazy. If you read my post, it clearly stated I haven't been a Fulmer fan since '98. I'm just saying if they decide to go middle of the road (and they won't), offer it to Fulmer. Not because he can get us back to the top of the mountain...because he can stabilize the program (and obviously improve it from where it is now) and get it headed back in the right direction until we can make a big time hire. At least with him, we know we have someone who will give all he can for the program he loves.
