After this morning I have decided I need some new base layers for cold weather. I have never been what I guess you would call high tech when buying hunting clothing. I've always wore the old insulated long john's but I don't reckon I'm as tough as I used to be. I've heard good things about the Under Armor 2.0's I think it was. So what type base layer do you guys recommend I buy? I don't care what it cost, I hate sitting and shivering

I would not buy the ua artic shield is pretty good. Even rocky makes good stuff. Ua is way over rated for keeping you warm great stuff or moister wicking. About it IMO

It's all about the layering system as a whole, not just a "base" layer.
You should start with a good wicking layer: silk, poly pro,etc. to help keep the moisture away from the body. (NO COTTON)
Then your insulation layer, which can be a combination of layers: say different weight insulatied underwear(pending the temps of the day), fleece, wool, etc. (NO COTTON)
Then your weather/shielding layer: for this you want windproof, waterproof/repellent. (can be insulated or non, your choice)
The trick is to have all of the above available and to mix and match the layers according to your needs and the weather conditions/temps.
I live and hunt in a much colder region of the country than you do, so I have grown up working this system out.
(TOP)I personally use a good quality poly pro base shirt(long sleeve) then I have 3 different weights of insulated underwear I choose from, according to the temp. and situation I will be hunting(sitting, walking, or combo of both)I combine the underwear with one of two polartec pull overs, (a regular one, and one with windshear liner) I use a blaze orange cover shirt(chamios)over the top for visibility.
(BOTTOM) I wear one layer of underwear(weigh pending conditions), will add a pair of polar fleece legging(sweats cut off at the knees) if needed, covered with camo BDU pants. If it rains or gets windy. I have a pair of windproof/waterproof over pants I carry in my pack.
(FEET) poly pro sock liners, wool socks and Mucks
I carry my insulated parka with me rolled up on my pack as well, if needed.

Under armour kept me warm in North Dakota the temps got down to -49 at night when i was working there.I also wear them hunting here in the south i have never been cold while wearing them the 3.0 is a good choice they run $50.00 top $50.00 bottom at G. Mountain. A good U A beanie and headcover is well worth the money also hope this helps.Oh yea if your feet get cold look up Baffin Driller boots they keep you warm to - 49 also there a little over a $150 bucks there like siting in a recliner in the house also man,,, great choice waterproof to.

Go by the old saying, cotton kills. Against your skin should be a poly-pro layer. Fleece or wool on top of that then a windproof/waterproof yet breathable shell.

I broke down and bought the UA base 3.0 upper and lower. I hunted two consecutive days, the temps were pretty much identical. The first morning I was pretty darn cold till the sun started shining on me. Then I started to warm up. The next morning I used the ua products along with the same clothing as the previous morning.
I stayed very comfortable the whole time. I never got cold at all. I hated buying into the gimmick products. But they worked great for me. I am sure there are others that are better. But both of them cost me 56 dollars.

I have Nike's version of the cold gear compression fit base layer. Was in Walmart the other day and saw they had a private brand of it. I love mine and will continue to use it.

IMO UA ain't no gimmick. I don't go hunting or fishin in the wintertime without mine on.
