300 has left better bloodtrails when needed in my experience.

Both are great rounds, sold my 300 because of recoil, still have my 7mag but the older I get the more I like my 243.

I wouldn't want either. Just too much gun for me.

7mm is not too much gun but a 300 is in my opinion. I have shot a few with a 300 and a lot with a 7mm.

My Ruger 7mm Mag with handloads in the mid 150gr range is a deer killing machine.

9 times out of 10 when I walk out of the house to deer hunt with a rifle I have either a 7mm rem mag or a 300 win mag in my hand.
My 300 is my favorite rifle. She is like an extension of me. When she makes noise, stuff dies, simple as that. Her name is Diana. Browning A-Bolt with a 3-9X50 Leupold varix II.
MOST of the time, if I can get my sights on it with that rifle, it dies.
With that being said, from my experience from killing a BUNCH of deer, the 7mm mag does more damage to a deer than the 300 does. It is like until you get out to 250+ yards the 300 just don't get going good to just really pound the deer. However, I don't guess it matters what kind of damage is done when it hits them and they drop where they stand.
Couple of other things. I shoot Remington Core Lokt ammo out of both. 150 grains, from wal-mart. I don't reload and ain't gonna spend any more than I have to for shells. Their accuracy has been more than acceptable and out of my 300 it is a friggin tack driver.
I also aim at the center of the shoulder when straight broadside and if not, or if I am in a good mood, I go for the high shoulder / low neck shots. Complete, total and immediate shut down of all communication. When I am shooting a centerfire rifle I am not a fan of blood trails. Bang / flop, go get the deer. That is how I like it.
I don't care what kind of high performance sports car or jacked up four wheel drive you got, if you rip both front wheels off, it ain't going far and however far it goes, it will be easy to follow.
Since you asked, there ya go and in the words of Buckwild, YMMV

Ruger's post is the best one on this thread. I share a lot of similarities, except I shoot a 7mm Rem mag...never have shot a 300.
