Shot a really good mature buck yesterday evening, but things didn't end so well just yet. He was approx 125 yrds. .243, straight down he goes, lays lifeless for 10-15 secs, then starts the spasm kicking. So I figure just his last life coming out of him, so I dont panic, well, after been laying there a total of probably 30 secs, hes back up and hauling the mail. Sick at my stomach, I get to his impact spot. Dark blood, and trailed fairly easy for 60 yrds. He was on an old rd bed at last blood that headed down in the thick holler. I didn't poke around in there since I didn't have blood anymore. Now just hunting the morning and going to look in little bit.

Question is, was it a fatal shot? Should I have hopes of finding this deer? Where does it sound like I hit him? I laid it on the shoulder. Thanks

The dark blood sounds like you got liver if there is any water around I'd look around it but more than likely if he went into the thick stuff and you didnt bump Him he probably bedded in there. Good luck finding him and think as if you were the deer where would you run if you were wounded. Hope you find him.

Rem thanks. I dont much think I had a pass through, the trail didnt appear to be bleeding on 2 sides, like some previous pass through shots. But im not counting that out. Also, would a liver shot knock him down for any length of time?

Sounds like liver should be able to find him if you backed out and did back out.

Do deer tend to clot up so quick?

A liver shot will knock a deer down its the shock of the bullet hitting him that causes them to buckle and fall. I shot my buck durring bow season in the liver and didn't find much blood at all so I backed out agent back later to the last place I saw him and after about 30 mins of looking we found him in a thicket not 150 yards away from the stand.

Biggest deer I ever shot went down like a rock, five yards away and if I had to do it over again I would have shot him four more times with arrows so he couldn't get up and walk away.....I regret it to this day....good luck.

oh and if it happens again, I'll keep shooting until I run out of ammo.....

My first deer i shot with a 243 years ago, dropped him. I got down from my stand and looked and he was standing up eating, so i put another one in him. When i looked, hit him both times and the shots were an inch from each other.
