When they thought I was ready I would be given 3 shells turned loose and expected to account for the shells.By the time I was old enough to shoot a Big Gun I sat on the stand by myself for my 1st deer.A 243 that fits him and he can shoot on his own proficently would be the best choice. IMO
The worst thing that can happen is if the 270 kicks to hard for him and he starts flinching when he pulls the trigger. Good Luck to him .Hope ya'll have many years of hunts together.

I like this...

My boys are 4 and 1.5, and they are going to learn to small game hunt before deer hunting. I don't know when that will happen either, it will depend on them.

There is nothing wrong with him shooting the .410. If he is comfortable shooting it he will have more confidence.

A 3030 has a lot kick.a 223 has plenty of killing power out to at least 100y with good bullets with low recoil.making a kid recoil shy will shape their future a lot of times.your choice & not all kids are ready at a predetermined BW said dont force/rush them

A lot of us started out with a .22 and squirrell / small game hunting. I'd do the same.

Rossi makes a 223 or 243 combo for kids and it's perfect for a smaller hunter. It literally weighs less than my sons BB gun and killed his first buck with it when he was 6 or 7. And my son is small. The trouble will a regular size rifle is that they are just SO heavy for a 6 or 7 yr old to hold up and the stock is normally too long as well. Get that boy one of them Rossi's and let him get it done right. They are very reasobably priced and his came with a 22 and a 20 gauge barrel as well. It's a MUST HAVE for the young hunter !

i agree with starting them off on squirrels and other small game instead of throwing them straight into deer hunting. they should have developed some rudimentary woodsmanship skills and are much more prepared to make the shot after a couple of years chasing squirrels.
