If we kill a buck or doe on our own land then do we have to get it tagged by law ? I understand that it helps with keeping up with data and such but is it law ?

Yes, it is 100% required. It is a Class B misdemeanor if you do not. And, after checking in the first deer (or turkey back in turkey season), landowners are required to fill out temporary kill tags just like everybody else.

Thanks for the help. Well crap now I have to tell the wife she was right. Ok then when our son kills his first deer then he can just show his hunting license when we check it in...right ?

Yes. If he has a hunting license he will be in the system and it will be a simple deal to check it in.
Once he checks in #1, he will have a permanent harvest tag for the carcass for processing or taxidermy purposes, and will receive a temporary kill tag. On his next kill it has to be filled in/invalidated before field dressing or transporting.
