My boy is fixin to be 6. I'm getting his gun worked on and I believe he could get it done with my 270. He can have the rifle proped on the ground blind window for a rest, and aim by himself but he will have the stock under his armpit. I could hold the butt with my hand to keep the recoil off him. Any suggestions or thoughts? I can take pros and cons.

I would not risk wounding an animal. I too have a 6 year old and he's big for his age but his shooting technique is just not good enough to hunt with. I'm going to give him a few more years at shooting at targets before turning him loose on a live animal. Just continue to take him hunting with you for awhile and have him help with everything else.

I wouldn't expect your hand to keep the scope off of his eye.
If he can consistently hit targets at various ranges, I would let him shoot.

I bought a synthetic stock for my 243 and cut it short enough for my kids to shoulder it and look through the scope. You may not need to do that, but it worked for me.

Bad idea IMO. I think there is a real possibility in him getting hit with the scope doing that. If he gets popped, it may turn him against any shooting/hunting.

IMO it is far better to wait until he can shoulder and shoot a youth model of a lesser caliber and be consistent with his shooting. I'd take him and let you do the shooting.

One of my sons took his first deer at age 7 with a .243, but he started shooting when he was 3 with a .22. He loved to shoot and shot a ton, so he was ready to move up to the .243 when he was 6. I would not recommend letting him shoot a .270 with the butt under his arm. One bad experience could turn him against shooting.

I may just wait for his to get done. He shoots a 410 by himself and does fine and can hit fine with slugs inside 50yds which is as far as ide let him shoot. My 270 is a fairly heavy bolt gun and what is not bad recoil to me will 10x on him I guess.

My suggestion would be either get him a rifle that gfits or wait until he is old enough.

I'd get a rifle he can shoulder and shoot himself as we'll. my little girl is 3 and shoots a 22 pretty decent. I have a single shot NEF 243 with a heavy barrel and plan on knocking 1-2" off the stock for it to be even shorter for her when the time comes...
