It's been a hard season this year. So many irons in the fire seem to be crowding out time in the woods. Was thrilled to be drawn for the Enterprise South hunt in Chattanooga, and while it was a great hunt due to contact with friends, the hunt itself was a comedy of errors. It didn't help that I was sick with a bad cold, but I can't blame a virus for the times I was busted by alert deer, nor the deer I arrowed that I shouldered and didn't penetrate.
Then muzzleloader came along, and missing a deer on opening day had me closely examining my scope, discovering that I had mounted it incorrectly 3 years ago! And last week I pulled a shot on a young buck on the move, and failed to make a recovery.
So on rifle opener I completely changed gears, putting my own planning aside and throwing in with Catman529, hoping he could turn the tide for me. And while I saw no deer from my stand, perhaps the very act of being in contact with the mighty doe that he shot was enough to rub off on me. That afternoon I went to my muzzleloader spot and found no one there, so I trekked out and set up to wait out the remainder of the day. Louis L'amour kept me company, a Diet Dew kept me hydrated, and a bag of pistachios kept me munching. As the last hour of the day faded, I put all my focus on the field edges, and with 10 minutes to go, there he was! I stood and braced against a tree, making sure he was a deer I wanted to bring home.
Yep. Put the crosshairs on and squeezed. What a beautiful sight to see him rocked by the shot. I jacked another round in and scoped him, but he had stopped 20 yards from where I shot him, and had the look of a deer seeing his last bright light. He swayed just a bit, then reared up on hind legs and did a back flip. At 150 yards, was actually the farthest shot I have ever taken. Ever.
No idea what he weighed, but a real good testimony about how it was dragging him across acres of corn stubble. I'm delighted to have him in the fridge, and hoping he chases the hunting gremlins away.

Stats: .243 Remington 700 youth model; cheap Remington Core-Lokt shells; Leupold 3x9; Whitetail deer
