Sunday I decided to hunt a strip of woods that borders a big bean field (Beans finally were taken out on Friday!) and a Hay field. I found a series of licking branches and scrapes on the edge of the bean field and set up about 50 yds into the woods. I watched 4 small bucks hit each of the licking branches and scrapes from 8 AM til 11:30 before the wind switched up on me.

Have you guys had success during the pre-rut and rut hunting these types of primary scrapes?

haven't really hunted em, I have heard mixed results on here. I prefer the big rub lines since I started hunting one, on friday saw 2 older bucks and shot one of them in the rub line. Maybe beginners luck but they say a concentration of rubs is worth hunting.

naw just remember what i said "beginners luck" could be a big factor besides hunting low-pressured private land deer. I have been fortunate

#1- They are not primary scrapes. There is no such thing. That is a term outdoor writers came up with years ago. There are only two types of scrapes: The ones that get "worked" and the ones that don't.

#2-Seldom will a mature buck come right to a scrape in daylight. Usually they are scent checked from some distance downwind. It will happen but not often. Great for the young guys and does, though.

Great post bowriter.

Dsmartin311,

Most older buck visits to scrapes occur at night, no matter where the scrape is located.
