Just wondering the member's opinion about the warmest possible base layer. I have had UnderArmour for several years, but want to trying something warmer if possible. Price is not an option.

Suggestions?

first off, your base layer should be a wicking layer.......such as polypro, silk (never cotton)

then an insulation layer, then a weather shield layer.

I hunt in a climate much colder than most of you guys see on a regular basis.

My combo, very's pend the temp's and if I will be still hunting or sitting.

Today it was 18 degs. I start off with a polypro(wicking) long sleeve, then a medium weight insulation shirt (Cabela's) then a sleeveless Duofold shirt, a windshear polartech pullover and a microfiber overshirt. I remove the polartech pullover as needed if I am walking.
This combo is good to sit for several hrs in those temps.

I don't know but I wish I could find some combination that doesn't make me feel like the Michelin Man and will let me raise my arms over my head.

The UA stuff is great for a base layer for wicking. However, it doesn't do much for insulation. The polypro will do a much better job trapping heat and still wicking moisture.

The best longjon that I have found are also some of the cheapest the heaviest wt. polypro that Sportsman's guide sells works great, and is in the $15 range. If it is down in the low teens or colder I may add the UA leggings under that for an extra layer.

My upper body layer is normally one of the UA mock turtlenecks on first, followed by some thermax, and then a windproof pullover. If it is really cold, I may add a thin polarfleece layer under the outer pullover.

None of it will keep you very warm if it is windy and you don't have something that blocks the wind and keeps your warm air from being constantly blown away. On a recent rip north it was VERY windy several days, and I lived in some goretex pants and a goretex raincoat. All had a very soft and silent finish and kept the wind out. It made a world of difference.

Just gotta say, it's not only about the base layer.

I shop Goodwill or yard sales with an eye for a solid wool sweater. Doesn't much matter what it looks like. Over time they will shrink; I just passed one on to a friend because it was getting too snug. The one I bought this week was $1, made in Ecuador, and kept me warm as toast w just a thin polypropylene shirt underneath. Wicking by the body, insulation next.

Guys, listen to western hunters, back country hikers and sheep. Go with a merino wool base layer. You will not be disappointed. It's soft, doesn't itch, keeps you warm when its cold, helps keep you cool when its warm, keeps you warm if it gets wet, and most importantly it doesn't pick up your man stink. It's just flat out better than Under Armour or any other synthetic base layer.

For cold weather...

Try this bottom: SmartWool NTS Base Layer Bottoms - Merino Wool, Midweight

And this top: SmartWool NTS Base Layer Top - Zip Neck, Merino Wool, Midweight

All my Underarmour has been replaced with merino wool base layers and I will never go back.

I agree on the wicking base layer but if your serious about being warm there are quilted long johns and/or down filled that are seriously warm.
