The best I have found is UA cold gear base layer with a regular old school lOng Johns over them. The UA wicks and the LJ insulates.
Another thing you need to do is cover your neck. If your head and neck are cold you can get cold in a hurry....

I use the bass pro version of the under armor I love them. They have the wicking capabilities, to get sweat off of you. It definitely works. I made the mistake of wearing them once on top othe long johns and froze to death.

Good fleece wader liners work good too, on top of your base layer. They have those stirrup straps on them that keep them tucked in when pulling on your outer layer, or if you outer layer zips over your leg, the sturrup keeps the wader liners down inside your boots.

I think the most important thing to do when layering is walking into your stand half naked and put on all your layers when you get to where your going. I always pack in my warm stuff and put it on when I plan on settling down.

I agree as well.

This year, I have walked in with only my UA base on. Once in my tree and cooled off, I then start to layer up. It has made a great difference.

I changed a number of other things this year too. New insulated boots, UA 3.0 Base Layer for top and UA 2.0 Base Layer for bottoms. I have been very pleased.

If you havent tried Merino Wool, you are missing out. I get mine off CamoFire.com for around $30 a piece. I have the Core 4 Element line of Merino Wool. Is 180-weight. Really thin stuff, but its amazing how warm it keeps you.

The lowest I've been out this year was 30 degrees. That morning I had my merino wool layers on, a First Lite Labrador (merino wool full zip sweater), and a coat and I was good to go.

Of course keeping your head, hands, and feet warm will go along way to staying in the stand a little longer too. I've got merino wool face mask, socks, and I got a pair of gloves on order.

Merino Wool. I'm telling you, its the ticket.

And yes, I wear as little as possible going in. I dont put on my warm gear until I get in the stand and cooled down a little (not cold).

Once you get cold, it's very rare you can get 'warm' again.

I agree on have a wicking layer as your base. I started using UA cold gear as a base about 3 years ago and have only used my insulated overalls a few times since them. Like this past saturday it was 20 with a hard frost and I just wore my UA cold gear, thermals, and windproof pants and jacket and I was comfy all morning. I also usually pack in my jacket or thermals depending on temp since I have a half mile walk from the house to the deer stand.
