I understand that you must use a 36 cal or larger and no full metal jacket ammo but is there any minimum requirements of the handgun to be legal i.e. barrel length, revolver, etc?

Actually, the .36 cal. or larger only refers to muzzleloading handguns.
The only requirement for hunting deer during the G/M/A season starting on Sat. is that it be a centerfire caliber and not use full metal jacketed ammunition.
Juveniles under the age of 18 are prohibited from using handguns for the purpose of hunting.

I thought at one time there was a minimum barrel length. It must be the fog in my gray matter!

At one time there was a 4" minimum barrell length. That went away a while back.

I would hate for someone to hunt with a subcompact 9mm, but it would not be a bad gun for killing a downed deer.

25 auto is also legal.

So is shooting a .50 cal Desert Eagle at a deer at 300 yds. When you start trying to make people ethical by regulation of their weapon, it is pretty much a losing propositon. So far from what we have seen it has not been a problem.
About the only way to have a "good" regulation is to tie it to ft. #s of energy at the muzzle. With differences in barrel length, bullet velocity, etc., it is almost unenforceable.
The 4" reg did take some ridiculous choices and make them illegal. But, it didn't make folks use some of the marginal 4" guns in a responsible manner. Until we see/hear that we have caused a major problem, I'd rather give most folks a little credit for common sense.

SCN Would you please go to congress with that last statement. They seem to try to regulate the dumb out of people. I would hope that people that like to hunt with a handgun will look at what it limitations are. I like the TN law, not that I would hunt with a hand gun but it allows for hunters to carry a pistol to kill a deer with that has been wounded.
The only other bad side I see is the ability for the poachers to hunt from a vehicle easier. But if it was illegal they probably would still do it.
