I would still have someone look at it(gunsmith). My concern would be the bullet not being lined up with the rifling. If it was out of alignment enough he could have damaged the part of the barrel where the bullet enters(called the throat).

So what was the head stamp on the fired cases? Something similar happened to me-I fired a .223 round in a mini 30 thinking it was our mini 14. The fired case looked similar. It fire formed as much as it could in the x39 chamber with a bulge and rupture above the case head. Nothing happened but a bunch of smoke exited the action. It is easy to do stupid stuff-we have to be ever vigilant and extra careful especially with very similar firearms and cartridges.
