Ok, time for a dumb question on my part, but sometimes if you don't ask, you don't learn.

I agree that it certainly looks like they aren't the same size cartridges. By shooting those rounds that were undersized for the chamber, what is the likelihood that the rifle was damaged?

If the bullet was a .284, it might not be that bad.

I'd have no reservations in shooting the rifle, with the correct ammo this time, of course.

as long as the bullets fired were .284 or smaller I dont think there will be any damage, this is what the hole on the right side of the action is for,,when the case ruptured any pressure that didnt go out the barrel should have came out that hole,,

if it would have been a 30-06 I dont think it would have chambered ,and is the reason the 280 Rem is a little longer than the 270 Win,so it is not possible to mistakenly shoot a 280 in a 270 rifle,,

I would clean the rifle and start over with new ammo and consider myself lucky..

I think most likely the bad cases are 7mm express (280rem) rounds fired in a 7mm rem mag chamber. You are lucky indeed!
