I copied this from a reliable person. We need to take this country BACK!! I'd like to pass along what I'm about to tell u & please share this thru email.
I'm returning now from being in gatlinburg TN. I was shocked to notice that many of the shops are replaced by new ones. The owners have foreign accents. I would guess 80% are now run by Indians, Pakistanis and now Ukrainians! I asked one lady where she was from and she said Ukraine. I asked 2 other shop owners where they were from: Ukraine. I jokingly asked "Did you folks buy up the whole left side of Gatlinburg"? She with barely veiled hatred and distain said" Yeah, pretty much". I tried to ask a vendor whom I asked first if he was American, about what was happening with all the foreigners. He refused to even talk about it. I asked another group and they seemed afraid but one woman spoke up with an attitude of careless determination and told us that the chamber of commerce was Iranians. That there was nothing they could do but try to stand. The others looked at her and each other nervously. I spoke to a young lady in a in busy shop and she carefully began to open up a little. She said the town was being bought up by a rich lawyer named Joe Baker and that he is renting the shops out to foreigners because they can afford higher rent since they don't have to pay taxes for 5 years. She said the foreigners change the business name and sell it to a relative and it continues tax free for 5 more years. It's destroying Gatlinburg. It feels creepy. I asked what the religious affiliation of most of the foreigners was--they said: MUSLIM!! A Muslim foothold in the mountains of Tennessee!
Very very scary!

Im not sure about all the tax things but a lot if the shops up there are run by Indians. We go spend a few days there every year and everyone has been nice. Hell, my local beer store is run by some of the nicest Indians around.

Wow....I love Gatlinburg. Hate to hear this. I have started noticing more foreigners the last couple of times I have been there. Sad.

The part about not having to pay taxes for 5-years pretty much debunks the bulk of that "pass it around" email. The IRS would tax the air we breathe if it could.

They do get a tax break unless they are not telling the truth. They have bought every store in my home town. The same family has 3 gas stations within 1/4 mile of each other... 2 are about 150 yards apart. They also bought the Subway.

As a foreigner (English) & a business owner, I can categorically state, the 5-year tax break is a complete myth! I pay the same taxes as every US business owner should & more than most actually do. Because we're under constant scrutiny by the INS (or whatever they're calling themselves this week) we don't get to get away with a lot of the 'business expenses' a lot of Citizens do. I had to be very firm with our accountant, explaining that although we 'could' claim a lot more deductions than we do, we have to show the Embassy, every year, just how much tax we're paying & we have to be seen to be paying as much as possible to keep our visa.

It's that way everywhere. Even in Alaska.....Skagway, Ketchikan, Juneau...most of the tourist shops were owned by Muslims, Hindu's ,etc.

JTHuntsalot, I was going to post that, but I thought it to be crass, rude, politically incorrect and just downright offensive. I still laugh my arse off at it though. If there is ever a Christian/Muslim war in the US, it will be over the price of cigarettes because they'll be the only ones left selling them.

This is old news. Gatlinburg moved in that direction twenty years ago! I haven't been there in years, just not the same experience anymore. If you want to see the area the way it was, go to Townsend and Wears Valley. There's a lot more to do and see then you think there is...;)

I can tell you this. There isn't but a handfull of people who own any property in Gatlinburg. Every bit of it is leased for the most part. Yes there are a bunch of sand rats up there. There are alot of Ukranians but none of them own the property the stores sit on.
Anybody who knows me knows that I absolutely hate Gatlinburg. There are some good local folks up there but for the most part.....its a cesspool.

If anyone wanted to see what the foreign nationals really get you would have to know a lot more information. But the old story of they all get 5 years tax free is not a correct statement. As I have stated before the IRS code is one of the most complicated codes there are. But on top of it is all the treaties that are in place. The treaties trump the tax law.

That is a link to the different treaties we have. In most cases they are not for people to not have to pay a tax but to stop them from having to pay double taxes. Say I am an american that works in Japan and i pay a 20% tax rate in japan for work i do in japan. the us may only tax me 15% because that max is 35%. Like most things that is a simple way of explaining it and there are tax planners that do nothing but international tax and i am not one.
I think you may find that the reason that some foreign nationals are doing so well may be more there culture of modest living family work and helping each other. Now it may lead into they take advantage of some of the social programs that we have while having others earn the money. But that is the same thing i see of some Americans. like a father of a kid earning money living in the house of a mother and kid get fed funding. But if you look at some FN they may have 5 families living in one house with 2 getting assistance and the rest working. The food is split and they have very little expenses then they use capital to start business and use the hireing of family to skirt the ss laws.

Yup, I landed here on 4/4/09 & I paid my first State Sales Tax bill on 4/18/09.
Was you first fed tax bill Jan 1 of 2010 a surprise or did you have enough taken out of your pay?
I know some people who come to the us do not with hold enough the first year and get a large bill the first year. Then they over compensate and with hold a lot for the next several years.

Well over 80% of Indians are Hindus. Hindus in India hate the Muslims next door in Pakistan and vice versa. The distrust between India and Pakistan is so great they have functional nuclear weapons aimed at each other.
The overwhelming majority of religious people in Ukraine are Christians. Less than 1% of the religious population in Ukraine is Muslim.
Look at all these Iranian names on the Board Of Directors for the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce:

Come on guys - don't fall for these sorry attempts to bait you into a frenzied rage. If those folks sneaked into the US illegally they ought to be thrown out, but if they immigrated here legally they have every right to open a business in Gatlinburg or any other town. There's nothing keeping Tennesseans from starting a shop in Gatlinburg except for themselves. Sad thing is most of the foreigners actually have the kind of old-school work ethic that our forefathers had. They'll run circles around today's American worker. I see it everywhere I go.
If it's bad as that e-mail describes then it should eventually correct itself by falling tourism. If American tourists keep going there and paying the high prices and buying the junky souvenirs from the Indians and Ukrainians then blame the American tourists. American tourists are #1 reason that places like Gatlinburg, Destin, Branson, etc. have lost their charm and turned into the overcrowded, expensive places they are today and that I choose to avoid.

I do alot of loan deals in gatlinburg. Yes alot of them are for Indians but the ones i've dealt with have been great customers. Like someone else stated, the demand for tacky souveneirs is what drives the business in Gatlinburg. I saw plenty of Good ole american rednecks frequenting those shops.

Geez. People complain that a tourist trap isn't what it used to be and get hammered for it. That's downright un-American by itself. Everyone has their own opinion, so calm down. I grew up in Nashville and wouldn't be caught dead living there now for a lot of reasons, some cultural, some not.
If you really look at the tourist areas, they are heavily impacted by the economy. An economic downturn that lasts a little too long can run a lot of folks out of business. Generally speaking, foreigners from the Middle East, India and Pakistan are accustomed to living much more frugally than Americans. They are willing to stay around through thick and thin because it's ten times better than what they left behind. My only complaint is when they live in the same building, like a motel, everything and every room smells like curry. Looks at all of the motels that are out in the middle of nowhere along the interstate system. A ton are owned/operated by foreigners because Americans either sold or leased them due to the constant economic struggle to make a buck with those properties.

Can I tell ya'll a story? My mother is a rather outspoken person...she is, ummm how can I put it...if you're not American, she don't have much to do with ya or have nice things to say.
With that said, she reluctantly began going into one of the gas stations close to where they live...because they sold ethanol free gas there and it was the only one for miles. It is ran by the Indian folk. At first, mom hated going in there. Well some how along the way, she started small talking with the Indian lady that worked in there, and they became sort of friends. The lady found out mom was looking for a job, and told her they were needing help at the store. Mom tells her she would be interested and they had her come in for a little interview. Mom told them she would work any hours they wanted her to, but she would like to be able to go to church. They were more than understanding on that...told her she wouldn't have to work any Wednesday evenings or Sundays, and to this date, they have stuck by that. She has worked for them a little while now and her view point of them has changed 110%. Mom has worked in a lot of places...mostly factories and such...and she said she has NEVER worked for any nicer of people. She said they are very hard workers.
It's hard for me to comprehend seeing mom do such a big about face with this...it's just amazing to me. She said they were talking the other day about the events in the middle east, and was very surprised to learn that they absolutely HATE the muslim people. Evidently they are bitter enemies.
