Or could have been shot off. I shot at a spike one year, found blood, but no deer. I got him later and had shot his tail off. Dude, I would say you either had a bad case of buck fever or your scope was REALLY, REALLy off!   He was facing away from me. Was aiming right for the booty hole. Shot was a little high. LOL Was broad sided the second time. Dropped where he stood. Hit in the front shoulder.
Thats a low percentage shot anyway. Ethically questionable, at best!
