Bryan, I have killed bucks with large necks and bucks with smaller necks. Any correlation with a higher number of mature larger necked bucks being killed? More testosterone and therefore more likely to be seen in daylight, hence, more killed. I have a 5 1/2 that has a "medium" neck and always has. He is completely nocturnal and is never been photographed with another deer (to my recollection). I'm thinking he possibly does not participate in the breeding process. Maybe he produces less testosterone than the average mature buck? Wondering how often this occurs? He has been a tough pill for me to swallow.

JCDEERMAN,

Neck size during the rut is highly correlated to age. The older the buck, the larger the neck. But just like anything in Nature, there will be variation from animal to animal. But neck size is one of the most accurate judgements of buck age around the rut.

Sorry, I tried to emphasize mature bucks in my original post. But we see most all mature bucks with large necks. Though him being the oldest one on camera, he has a smaller neck than ones much younger than him. And oh yea, the first thing I look at when I see a buck is his neck
