I take most of my meet to the processor. I usually only kill one a year and I'm not the greatest at butchering.

Tangent question - anyone know how much the processors are making off selling the hides they pull off the deer they are paid to process?

I take what I want ground to the processor...skinned quartered and de-boned except for the femur and shoulder bones. ...and sometimes I even debone the hams and shoulders. I really should just go ahead and get a grinder. Anyone use the KitchenAid Food Grinder attachment for a Standing Mixer?

Never have.... just never had an opportunity to learn it, HOWEVER, my new processor is a young guy who is SUPER nice so my plans are to get my rear out there and help him at least a half-day one weekend soon, with hopes of taking away enough knowledge to: * Process a few myself * Teach my boys how Basic Butchering of Livestock & Game by John J Mettler is a excellent book to start with.
I think I'll check that out.. I'm not too sure, at the rate things are going, that hunting may not become a necessity to help feed the family at some point - so I need to teach the boys for sure! Thanks

I think about $15 usually.

I haven't but I plan to buy it. Here's a test of meat grinders done by America's test kitchen: http://www.americastestkitchen.com/equipment-reviews/detail.php?docid=28011

I have used the kitchen aid and those are work horses we used them in my dad's restaurant. Also one trick to cleaning them is run bread through at the end let it dry and cleaning the holes is easy. We use to grind cheese also but he later got a commercial one for it. I use the kitchen aid for all I do now. I have told all the people I know down here if they shoot the deer and bring it to me I will clean it for split of the meet. I have 4 kids and a wife I need to teach how to butcher and practice makes perfect. I think everyone needs to learn how as a part of survival just like cooking with out microwave and elect stoves.

The Kitchen Aid attachment does work surprisingly well. Buy your ol' lady a mixer for Christmas and get yourself a meat grind all in one purchase
