We got a side of fried pickle spears and we got 6 spears for $6. The fried tomatoes were about as economical. The cole slaw and potato salad tasted like they bought them next store at the Kroger deli and the beans were straight from a can. The chicken was good but they don't give you the option as to the heat level like the one in Memphis.

Unless something has changed, there's only one heat option at the locations in Memphis and the original in Mason.

I have never been to one of the other ones but I read several online menus where you could request mild or spicy. I even found a review where the person ordered the mild and it came out spicy so my assumption was that you could request mild. I think my daughter would have liked mild better.

Actually, the "famous" place Downtown is a spinoff franchise of the world famous original in Mason, TN. All of the Gus's locations in Shelby County get their batter from Gus in Mason.

The chicken was better when it was Maggie's. When she passed her nephew Gus took over.

A common criticism seems to be their sides. Lots of reviews say skip the sides except for the appetizers, the fried pickles and green tomatoes are supposed to be good. I'll let ya know this afternoon. \:\)

3 piece dark. The beans and slaw are crap but I do like the potato salad. Fried pickles are good too.

We always get the family pack of dark meat and some fried pickles. -take the leftovers home for breakfast (LOVE cold fried chicken for breakfast). I don't mind the beans -not the best, but I don't mind them.

Some of the Gus's locations have a pretty good rice for a side. Kinda spicy.

The last time I ate in the original, it was still stale "light bread" and crappy Walmart bucket slaw.

Chicken was probably the best I have ever had. I was actually expecting something spicier...but even the wife said she didn't think it was very spicy. Maybe their spices need freshened up. However it was still darn good, crisp but not hard-crunchy crust, moist chicken.

The sides (mack and cheese, fries, okra and mashed potatoes) were all very ordinary.

Service was below average, the only server, heck the only other person in the front of the restaurant was taking all orders, tending tables, ringing checks etc all by herself.

The place itself is about as boring as it comes, old sports memorabilia on the walls, food served on Styrofoam plates, plastic fork and a roll of paper towels on every table.

I would only recommend it for takeout(chicken only). Heck the chicken (cooked to order) is too hot to eat for about 5-10 min's so the drive home ain't no big deal.
