Nope...2 different deer. I have multiple pictures of them and the one on top is missing the left brow tine. I've had them out in front of me at the same time.

If you shot the deer, would you have been happy about it or wished you hadn't?
HOOK,
I think the above is an important question. But once answered, an even more important question is "Why do you feel that way?". And what I'm getting at is why would you be happy or wished you hadn't shot that buck, especially why would you wish you hadn't shot a particular buck? Is it because you would worry what your fellow hunters would think or say? Is it because it would be below your usual personal standards?
I bring this up because of personal experience. Due to a strange set of circumstances, older bucks completely abandoned my property this year. All we have using the property is a snot-load of yearlings and a handful of 2 1/2 year olds. Considering my personal standard is usually any buck 3 1/2 or older, I went into this season being very depressed. There was literally almost no bucks on the property "worthy" of hunting. Yet a couple of days into MZ season I had the opportunity to take one of the best 2 1/2 year-olds on the property and I made snap decision to shoot him. A week later, one of my brothers-in-law who also holds to the same standards as myself, did the same thing. And I have to admit, this is actually turning out to be one of the funnest hunting seasons we've had in a long time. We don't have old, big bucks to hunt, but we are targeting the best bucks the property has this year, we are being successful at that, and we are having a blast! Yes, the bucks we are killing are below our normal standards, but honestly, the fun is back in hunting like it hasn't been in years. I think we often put too much pressure on ourselves to kill bucks that "measure up" to ourselves, and especially our peers.

I don't get to hunt much either. But my rule is if he gets you nervous about shooting him when you see him I shoot. If I see him and not immediatly exiced about his size I don't shoot.

LOL @ Todd... BSK...you're on the money. That's EXACTLY what's going on at my place. It never is an aspect of what other folks think. Although my area does not typically produce huge trophys I know and am quite happy with what is available to take there weather or not my self imposed limits help or not. I've had these restrictions for the last 9 years and it still has not produced anything bigger that what I consider a shooter and I typically only take 1 buck a season (by choice). I just think my expectations are too high largely because I have limited time in the field.....and seeing as you so elliquently put it... "a snot load of yearlings and 2.5 year olds" is wearing thin on me. We'll just see what the world has to offer in the next few weeks and keep on keepin on.

Its all about having fun for me now In the past I hunted so hard that it made it more like work. Now I have slowed way down and It's fun again. I used to only hunt horns and would pass on alot of deer because I was looking for that one to hang on the wall. I killed my first doe in about 12 years on opening day of mloader. I cant tell you how much better eating she is than the bucks I have killed in the past. I have killed two birds with one stone first I am back to having fun and not taking it so seriously and second the meat taste so good

You're being too picky if it's taking away any enjoyment from your hunt...
