I shot a 9 a couple of years ago like that. Turned out to be a big cut on the neck that appeared to be an arrow or bullet that went just a little high or from fighting. I tend to believe the prior but taxidermist thought a fight. Infection all over that area. I didn't eat any of the meat. Really bad smell. My brother had the same happen to him probably 10 years ago. Turned out to be a bullet wound. That deer was just like you described. Bullet was in hind quarter.

Probably not. Makes me think twice now about taking one to the processor. Maybe I'll at least start skinning them first atleast...
