Ok I have always been told that the deer start moving when the temps drop and I always try to be in the woods when it does but I have never noticed anything different. My question is why. Why do the deer move more during the day when the temps are cold? I am assuming its to eat keeping body temps up but I'm not sure. Does anyone have anything scientific on this? Have you noticed more movement? Just wondering.

Yes I'm sure he has a lot of input on this but I'm sure others do too. I'm curious.

Imagine wearing a fur coat year around. Deer will move more when the temps drop and make it more comfortable, as opposed to warmer weather. And yes, when it gets really cold, they wil seek out food sources to help generate their metabolism. As far as the rut, it will happen regardless. However, most movement will be at night if the temps are unseasonably warm, for the reason stated above.

has more to do with the time of year than temperature...imo.

have you ever noticed that dogs get a bit frisky when the weather turns cooler....it's not so hot out?

if you watch deer during hot temps, they seem to be less than enthusiastic about moving around, the young ones especially. When the temps start to change they get a little more pep in their step....chase each other around and so forth.

I guess we all get a bit more frisky at the first sign of cooler weather, I know I do, but I know what time of year it is....I think deer do as well...

I wish we had cold weather consistently to see if this is true

Another question. Does a deer get a thicker coat in the winter? I'm sure they do but am also interested as to when? Does the temperature dropping start this transformation? Could be a dugh huhh question but I feel I have a lot to learn about deer in general.

just examine the colder areas like Canada and the warmer ones like Texas......I doubt these areas worry much about change in temps unless they are very extreme...jmo, of course.

I think the shortening of the day, less hours of daylight, makes the deer grow their winter coat. This is what triggers the does to come into estrus and the bucks into rut. Their eyes sense this and their hormones change.
