Going to float caney tomorrow morning. Just taking my spinning gear. Any suggestions for lures this time of year? I'll mainly be wanting to cast for bass but the guy I'm going with loves trout fishing.

Thanks!

Can't go wrong with Rapala Xrap or other suspending jerk baits.

I do 99% of my Caney fishing with fly rod, but I've caught a few with yellow, brown, or olive in line spinners and small trout-colored crank baits

The Caney really isn't primarily a bass river. There are bass in there, I've caught a few nice size largemouth below the dam but really that's a trout and striper river. Walleye too at night. Bring small rooster tails, no bigger than 1/8 oz, 1/16oz is better. White, firetiger, and chartreuse have worked best for me. I hear pink is a good color too. Cast and reel in, it's very simple. Don't retrieve them really fast though and cast at about a 45 degree angle upstream so while you're reeling it and creating the flash that attracts the fish, it's also moving at about the same speed as something should be moving through that current. That's why you don't cast downstream, trout are picky and smart and they know something that small isn't swimming upstream with speed. Good luck!

PS - If you have any Trout Magnets or can get them before you go, leave the rooster tails at home and use them. Use really light line, 4lb at the most with bb splitshot about 18" above the lure. Cast out and twitch rapidly. You'll outfish a rooster tail 10 to 1 with those things.

Another vote for roostertails. Although I've never fished that river, I'd go with what MidTennFisher said. His advice is very similar to what I'll be fishing next week at the White River/Crooked Creek. I've had good sucess with 1/16 oz roostertails, mostly in grey or white.

Roostertails work great and the small Rapala's work great, the solid back for Bows and brocken backs for Browns, but I have always fished upper Caney for trout.

I haven't seen a super duper in a store in years, but they work well in the Caney. Rooster tails, Joe Fly's work too.

Tell me more about catching walleye on the caney. I have floated it a couple of time and done well for trout. Time of year? Just below the dam? Anything else anyone would care to share.
