With the amount of rust/pitting, you may want to consider an alternative finish such as Duracoat or the ceramic coating.............it may not show that pitting as badly.

FDXX75 Yup. Also you can fill in the pits with epoxy with a duracoat finish. Never know they were there.

I'm a little weird and like the character of a refinished rough gun, pits and all. Curious how it's coming along and what route you're taking with it?
There are some good videos on YouTube of how to take a 336 apart.

Well here is an update:
Sanded the barrel with 0000 steel wool and Rem Oil all weekend.
It is still pitted but finally got it to where it was looking like bare metal.
I also put a few coats of blueing on the tube - it has turned out pretty good but is not as dark as it originally was.
I will post more pictures when I get the barrel and receiver blued and the rifle put back together.
