At lunch I went to an indoor range with my boss who was tweaking the scope on his .50 muzzleloader....a savage that shoots smokeless. For some reason he was using a brass jig screwed into his rod to push the saboted balls down. About five shots in, he comes up with a bloodied nose....scope nose. It seemed a little odd. We pull the target backand his ball impacted side ways 10" off to the left. The same distance to the right looked to be a 5" vertical knife cut. No explanation for this as far as I can tell.

He pulled his ramrod up and the jig was gone. Had broke off in the barrel and went out with the shot. Could have been a real bad day.

Glad he wasn't hurt too badly.

Make sure the barrel is not bulged. I am not sure why he was using patched saboted balls in the Savage but he needs to run a saboted bullet down the bore to check for a bulged barrel. If the saboted bullet goes all the way down with even resistance he is good.IF there is a loose spot just past the rear sight the barrel has been bulged. Typically the saboted bullet will "freefall" for about 2 inches and then tighten back up.

I would have that barrel checked. There was a pressure spike, like tar12 said, the barrel could be bulged.

Very lucky gentleman indeed, glad to hear he is ok.

Ditto to having the gun checked out!!!!!!

This incident makes me think about the lack of awareness that some people have while using a firearm. Not only this incident, but the one where the guy supposedly left his bore sighter in the end of his rifle barrel and squeezed off a round..................AAAAAAAAh, what did he actually see looking through the scope???? Should have been the bore sight, not a target!!!!!!!
Safety, first and foremost!!!!!

Glad he's ok. Not sure why he would need a jig anyway. Modern ramrods should be able to push anything down.

Bore sighters, ram rods, cleaning jags and powder funnels have all bee shot out of muzzle loaders.Savage barrels usually survive the projectiles shot out but usually do not survive double loading with out bulging the barrel. The Savage barrels are proof tested beyond belief and are extremely strong. I suspect nothing but his pride is hurt at this point. It is easy for him to check for him self to see if it is bulged or not.Sometimes you can see a ringed halo type of spot but not always. The saboted bullet method always works and lets you know for sure.

He wasn't called an idiot for not knowing what he was talking about he was called an idiot because i took up for ppl here that shot a lot (not me), he said no one here knew anything about savage ML. I put on a post that i had read something somewhere. He called me out as someone who is just a "reader" not a shooter i agreed as i have only owned my savage a month but i called him an idiot for not reading into my post enough hisself to know that. Just because i don't know something doesn't mean no one here does, and i would like to think i should share info i learn on other sites such as dougs
