Shot a button head this past weekend thinking it was a doe, no bone at all showing through the skin. Checked it in as Male 0 antler points. Now the question is, do I still have 3 bucks I can kill, or does he count as one and I have 2 left. First time I ever shot a button, so it's new ground to me.

We don't have buck and doe limits, we have antlered and antlerless limits. Thus, it would not count against your antlered buck harvest.

I believe the law to be considered an antlered deer is 3 inches of bone.

You check it in as a button buck (male deer, antler points = 0). It does NOT count against your three buck limit.

You check it in as a button buck (male deer, antler points = 0). It does NOT count against your three buck limit. What is the reason for this? Is it because twra thinks people will check them as does or not check them at all? Just curious why they don't count against your buck limit. Personally I think they should.

Couple of reasons, the top two being...
1.) It may lower the doe harvest since folks would be more hesitant on pulling the trigger on antlerless deer in fear of shooting a button, especially if their buck limit was reached.
2.) It may make criminals out of honest folks who truly mistook the deer as a doe (when bucks are off limits).
Bottom line, it's too difficult to positively ID a button verse a doe. Thats why the regulations are geared toward visible antlers.
