Drop down to the 130 gr TTSX. Recoil will be less if you load it to 3000 fps. It will recoil like a 270.

I think Remington makes some reduced recoil loads for the 300 Win Mag, may want to try those.

Only you can decide. However, I'd be far more afraid of a guy that was really good with a .223, than you and your .300 wm. As said above, find a comfortable round and learn to shoot it well.

You can load a 300 mag down 30-06 recoil levels. Good reason to start reloading. Or dump the .300

Limbsaver recoil pads are worth their weight in gold. Excellent product and VERY noticeable recoil management.

Do both! You certainly don't need a 300 Mag for deer. Shoot a 120 or 140 gr 6.5 caliber bullet out of a 6.5X55 Swede, a 260 REM, or a 6.5 Creedmore and you'll be very pleased. If you can't get a new rifle, pick up some Lee reloading equipment and make your own reduced recoil loads for the 300. Down-load a 150 or 165 gr bullet to .08 WIN velocities and it will have recoil similar to the 308 WIN.
