If it's made by AB, Coors, or Miller, leave it out.
Otherwise, the sky's the limit.
I'm a Sam Adams w-h-o-r-e, myself. I'd just have a hard time not drinking it.

I use Sam Adam's Boston Lager in a good number of recipes, but have been known to use just about anything in the 'fridge if nothing else is available. LOL.

I used some of the Sam Adams Christmas beer (Old Fezziwig?) last December. Surprisingly good.

***Sidebar*** Rendezvous is no longer serving Michelob on draft, as AB no longer packages it in kegs. They are now soliciting suggestions.
But it's not like they can go wrong....anything is an improvement over Michelob anything.

I have used Miller Highlife before and it was was fine. Though I am not a fan of Budweiser, Coors, Bush etc products, I will drink High Life on hot days. PBR, too.
I do like rich, dark chili (usually use some Cocoa powder in the recipe), so a dark beer seems to make sense. -primarily curious if people have strong opinions on this matter.

I've become a beer snob in the past few years, so I stay away from the "American" big 3 anymore, whether it be for cooking or drinking.

Honestly I have never put beer in Chili. ...but a Belgian Ale seems appropriate. I don't think you could go wrong if you are just looking to add liquid anything is better than H2O.

Ghost River is good it's made locally. As far as the best beer period it's Alaskan Brewing Co. amber, summer ale, pale ale, stout are all good.

Basically, I shy away from the American style "light" and "heavy" designations. My simple answer is Sam Adams, or better. Lately, my non-Boston selections have been the Ghost River lines, New Belgium, Schafly, and McSorley's.

Who makes that? I had some stuff in Boston that was awesome. Knocked me sideways, but it was incredibly good. You'd never know (while you're drinking it) that it's an 8.0% ABV until the next morning. Some brew out of New Hampshire called Long Trail Brewing "Double Bag".

Stone is/was available in Memphis. It is a Colorado beer.
Southwestern Distributors was the wholesaler for it and several other micro-brews. Southwestern wine and liquor has recently been sold and I don't know who bought their beer business.
Have you tried Harpoon? Another great Boston beer.

I'm trying to remember if I had Harpoon while I was up there. I was so excited to be 10 miles from the Boston Brewery, that I didn't think much of the other stuff.

The guy that statred Harpoon was a brewer at S Adams.

This thread got me drooling so I sucked it up and ordered a case of Alaskan Amber yesterday should be here at the beginning of next week. The best amber beer I've ever put to my lips, haven't had one in a couple 3 years now and it's long over due. Best $57 I've spent in a while.

I have never tried beer in my home made chili, do you still add water. I just had a tremendous thirst, be back shortly...

No, don't add water. The tomatoes (whole, chunks, sauce... whatever you use) should have enough water content combined with the beer.
