ran one with a .338 lapua mag under it at a shoot once...SIII 3.5X10X44 in 30MM...LTR gig....nice glass, seemed to track well and would love to really put one thru its paces....which are you looking at

I've read good reviews on I believe it's the "Big Sky" model. Supposed to have good glass.

I think I'm about to buy a Big Sky for a Savage ML-II. From what I've read they're good glass for the money. SWFA has them on closeout right now http://swfa.com/Sightron-Closeouts-C4847.aspx

it will go on a bolt action .270 and will be used for deer hunting. distance will be as far as i can shoot with that caliber.

They were a well kept secret for a while. Very good scopes at a very low price. I guess the secret is out!

That's what I'm torn between now. I have a Minox ZA-3 on another gun that I really like but I thought I might give Sightron a try since the price is right. Have you compared the Minox to the Big Sky in terms of low light visibility?

I like the Sightrons, but I don't think it will beat a Minox in low light situations. I can't tell the difference between my Minox scopes and my Zeiss Conquests as far as low light goes.
That's a heck of a price on the Minox.

Do you have a Sightron Big Sky or have you been able to compare them with your Minox? Low light visibility is what I'm ultimately after.

No, I don't have one to compare side by side. Just haven't seen much close to the Minox or Zeiss. Hopefully I'll be wrong.

Kimberman has the Big Sky SII and a Minox ZA5.
IMO, the edge goes to the Minox. But, you can go wrong with either one. They will both get the job done.

I have a Sightron Big Sky 3-12x42 with a mildot reticle and a Minox ZA5 1.5-8x32 with the versaplex reticle. I have never actually compared them side by side. I set both scopes to 3x. I figure the larger obj isn't going to be a factor at that power. My honest opinion when looking out across my backyard at night at a street light around 50 yds away, and I have to give it to the Big Sky.
The only issue with the Big Sky that is on sale is that it has the dot reticle and I don't know whether I would like it or not. For another $50, swfa has a ZA3 3-9x50 with the XR-BDC reticle.

It would be a hard choice for me to choose between those 3. If the Big Sky would come in a different reticle, I would definately jump on it. The reticle might be ok. I have not looked thru it so I can't say but it worries me a little. The ZA3 3-9x50 has a bigger objective which will help with higher powers at low light and the reticle looks better. If you just want the best $199 scope money can buy then go with the ZA3 3-9x40.
